How many dimensions is this?

In the past couple of weeks, I’ve been posting about seemingly simple mathematical problems that defy intuition, and where the answers we find on the internet turn out to be shallow or hard to parse. For a taste, you might enjoy the articles on Gödel’s beavers or on infinite decimals. Today, let’s continue by asking a simple question: how many dimensions does a line have? A trained mathematician might blurt out an answer involving vector spaces or open set coverings, but there’s no fun in that.

Using Claude Code to modernize a 25-year-old kernel driver

As a bit of background, one of my hobbies is helping people recover data from old tape cartridges, such as QIC-80 tapes, which were a rather popular backup medium in the 1990s among individuals, small businesses, BBS operators, and the like. I have a soft spot for tape media; there’s something about the tactile sensation of holding these tapes in my hands that makes the whole process very joyful, even though QIC tapes are notorious for their many design flaws. With some careful inspection and re

Report: Apple planning to launch Apple Intelligence in China before end of 2025

Since launching Apple Intelligence in 2024, Apple has been working to release the set of features in China, the largest smartphone market in the world. But, from the very start, they have faced pressure from both China and the United States. Now they might finally be close to launching. Apple’s past struggles One of the primary issues Apple is facing is that any company looking to launch generative AI product in the country must have approval from a local regulator. In order to get this approv

Apple Reminders on macOS Tahoe includes this interesting piece of vintage UI design

Despite macOS going through a couple major redesigns over the past couple years with Big Sur in 2020 and now Tahoe in 2025, there’s still one app that includes a very old looking interface that predates these redesigns: Apple Reminders. If you open up Apple Reminders on the latest version of macOS, whether that be Tahoe beta or the stable version of Sequoia – you’ll find a little bit of a UI surprise when you open up the Photos picker to attach a photo to a reminder: What makes this interestin

This pettable Poké Ball is a Tamagotchi-style toy with over 150 Pokémon inside and I need it now

Japanese toymaker Takara Tomy is releasing a Poké Ball virtual pet toy so you can fulfill your dreams of carrying your favorite Pokémon around with you everywhere. I don't know how this one slid under my radar when it was announced at the end of August (perhaps because all my attention has been on Tamagotchi Paradise ) but now that I've seen it, I must have it. While it appears to be a Japan-only release, the product page shows it will have an English language option in the menu. Pre-orders are

iCloud Calendar abused to send phishing emails from Apple’s servers

iCloud Calendar invites are being abused to send callback phishing emails disguised as purchase notifications directly from Apple's email servers, making them more likely to bypass spam filters to land in targets' inboxes. Earlier this month, a reader shared an email with BleepingComputer that claimed to be a payment receipt for $599 charged against the recipient's PayPal account. This email included a phone number if the recipient wanted to discuss the payment or make changes to it. "Hello Cu

Image by Getty / Futurism Studies Some doctors are now advising their pregnant patients to avoid plastic itself, which contains harmful chemicals that can hurt some mothers and babies alike. Marya Zlatnik, a University of California at San Francisco fetal medicine specialist, told the Washington Post that when giving some of her early-pregnancy patients the rundown of what they should and shouldn't consume or be exposed to, she's begun adding plastic products to her no-no list. Her concern: t

Apple’s new generative AI ‘answer engine’ might arrive sooner than we initially thought

Early last month, Bloomberg reported on Apple’s new in-house generative AI search product – with a new ‘Answers, Knowledge, and Information’ team. Despite this team’s recent formation, we might get to see the fruits of their labor much sooner than one might’ve anticipated. Despite all of the Apple Intelligence Siri woes, Apple still seems determined to make an impact in the generative AI space. That’s why it’s trying to develop a Perplexity and ChatGPT rival, which we’ve previously referred to

The New Math of Quantum Cryptography

The original version of this story appeared in Quanta Magazine. Hard problems are usually not a welcome sight. But cryptographers love them. That’s because certain hard math problems underpin the security of modern encryption. Any clever trick for solving them will doom most forms of cryptography. Several years ago, researchers found a radically new approach to encryption that lacks this potential weak spot. The approach exploits the peculiar features of quantum physics. But unlike earlier qua

Purikura: The Japanese Grandmother of the Selfie

Unfortunately, as smart phone technology progressed and Japan’s demographic shifted to an elderly population, Purikura’s popularity waned. Between 2007 and 2017, annual sales fell about 30.7 billion yen. While they may have seen their golden age come and go, the booths remain popular all over Japan - and with one survey suggesting that over 90% of Japanese people have tried Purikura at least once, they don’t look like they’re going away any time soon.

The key to getting MVC correct is understanding what models are

Smalltalk MVC is defined in Design Pattern as: MVC Consists of three kinds of objects. The Model is the application object, the View is its screen presentation, and the Controller defines the way the user interface reacts to user input. However this definition has been abused over the years - Back in 2003 I gave a talk citing how bad Apple’s definition was. At the time it stated: A view object knows how to display and possibly edit data from the application’s model… A controller object acts a

Kerry Wan/ZDNET Follow ZDNET: Add us as a preferred source on Google. Like clockwork, a new iPhone has made its way through the rumor mill in August, and users are beginning to wonder if they should buy what's currently available or wait until fall to see how things play out. Based on past trends, there's a good chance Apple will unveil the iPhone 17 series next Tuesday. So, should you pick up an iPhone 16 from your local Apple store today or play the long (but not that long) game? Also: App

A history of metaphorical brain talk in psychiatry

We first turn to Adolf Meyer, the most influential psychiatrist in the US over the first 3rd of the 20th century [27]. It should be recalled that until World War II, American psychiatry was a rather small profession, largely composed of superintendents of mental hospitals who largely had a biologically orientation to their work. In 1907, while the director of the New York Psychiatric Institute, Meyer wrote about his concerns of the narrow views that US physicians would typically take in their ap

Apple could reintroduce iPhone mini thanks to this recent lineup change, here’s how

In 2020, Apple surprised a lot of people by re-entering a neglected segment of the smartphone market: small phones.
