Starlink is experiencing a network outage

SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet service is experiencing an outage. Reports of connectivity issues started around 3:20PM ET, based on DownDetector, though SpaceX has only recently acknowledged the outage via a post on the Starlink X account. Users across the US, Europe and the UK have also reported issues on r/starlink, the service's Reddit page, and SpaceX has even acknowledged the outage on Starlink's website. The number of people potentially impacted could number in the millions — as of

New Koske Linux malware hides in cute panda images

A new Linux malware named Koske may have been developed with artificial intelligence and is using seemingly benign JPEG images of panda bears to deploy malware directly into system memory. Researchers from cybersecurity company AquaSec analyzed Koske and described it as "a sophhisticated Linux threat." Based on the observed adaptive behavior, the researchers believe that the malware was developed using large language models (LLMs) or automation frameworks. Koske’s purpose is to deploy CPU and

Working on a Programming Language in the Age of LLMs

I’ve been working on Rye since 2018. It’s a project of joy — but also because I believe there is a potential to create something of value to others, eventually. Even people living under a rock know we’ve entered the age of LLMs. I don’t jump to ships too soon, but eventually, even I had to admit: code can get generated from prompts. And in many situations — with a smart prompter — the results are quite OK. Even if you disagree, genie can’t be put back in the bottle. Technical progress generall

IPNSIG was founded in 1998 by Vint Cerf and researchers within academia and NASA/JPL. We are now a full Chapter within the Internet Society, known as the Interplanetary Chapter. We work to extend terrestrial networking into solar system space, which is consistent with the Internet Society’s objectives to grow the internet to unpopulated areas, and connect the unconnected domain—and to ensure that even in space, “The Internet is for Everyone”.

You might not need a Python class

Python is an incredibly versatile programming language known for its simplicity and readability. Among its features, the ability to use classes for object-oriented programming is both powerful and frequently recommended. However, classes aren’t always the best solution. In many cases, Python’s built-in types, functions, and standard library modules provide simpler, cleaner alternatives. Here are several scenarios where you might not need a Python class: Simple Data Containers: Use Named Tuples

Mysterious Whale Makes a 17,000,000% Profit on a 14-Year-Old Bitcoin Bet

Several Bitcoin whales—investors who hold large amounts of the cryptocurrency — have recently started cashing out after leaving their Bitcoin untouched for more than a decade. Last week, one anonymous whale sold 80,000 Bitcoin for a whopping $9.5 billion. A user on X (formerly Twitter) first flagged the massive transaction, which was later reported by Tom’s Hardware. The seller had originally purchased the Bitcoin in 2011 for just $54,000, netting a staggering return of more than 17 million per

Apple’s New Game Overlay in macOS 26 Could be So Much More

Gaming on Mac has come a long way, but if people are going to take it seriously—like, really seriously—Apple still has some work to do. The new public beta for macOS 26 and its gaming updates won’t convince the naysayers, but I see it as the tipping point, and all Apple needs to do is relax for once and let the players take control. For macOS 26, Apple added a new Game Overlay and Games app. The former acts as an easy way to adjust brightness, volume, or call friends while in-game. It also has

Lyft Now Lets You Favorite and Block Drivers. Here's How It Works

Lyft has a new feature that can help take the awkwardness out of riding with strangers. On Thursday, the ride-sharing company announced that you'll be able to favorite or block a driver in the app after a ride. It's good news if you enjoyed your ride and wouldn't mind having that driver give you a ride again. And, if you're like me, it gives you a chance to be more comfortable with who you're riding with from the airport or dinner. Here's how it works and what drivers can also expect to see on

One of the Rarest Pokemon in History Is Coming to Pokemon TCG Pocket

No honest person can resist the attraction of Pokemon Gold. That's why Pokemon TCG Pocket's Wisdom of Sea and Sky expansion set is going all in on generation two when it arrives on July 29. This set will be one of the game's larger offerings, featuring more than 200 cards. I'm sure that has the most ravenous collectors breathing a sigh of relief, since the past two expansions -- Eevee Grove and Extradimensional Crisis -- have both had smaller complimentary card lists to build on Celestial Guard

Here's What You Should Know About iOS 18.6 Before iOS 26 Releases This Fall

Apple's iOS 18.6 will likely be released soon, ahead of its iOS 26 this fall, but the company's July 21 iOS 18.6 release candidate didn't change much on the iPhones of developers and beta testers. While iOS 26 will bring a major redesign to iPhones, the latest iOS 18.6 beta is filled with bug and security fixes, so developers and beta testers shouldn't expect new features. Apple/Screenshot by CNET Because this is a beta, I recommend downloading it on something other than your primary device. T

PS5 Beta Update Brings Simultaneous DualSense Controller Pairing to Multiple Devices

A system update for those in the PS5 beta program will enable a new feature for the DualSense or DualSense Edge controller, allowing it to be paired with multiple devices at the same time and quickly switch between them. The DualSense controller can be connected to several devices via Bluetooth that aren't the PS5, including computers (PC, Mac), and mobile devices like smartphones and tablets. However, you can only connect to one o

I've Tried Making My iPad An Almost Mac With iPadOS 26 Beta

I can see the light on the horizon. In the near future I'm carrying just an iPad around and it's my full everyday computer. The Macbook becomes a distant memory. Apple hasn't made my ultimate fantasy true yet, but with iPadOS 26 it comes closer than ever. The newest operating system for iPads, expected to officially debut this fall, is now available to try in a public beta. It adds Mac-like features galore -- including a new multitasking mode, flexible windows, little window-sizing buttons that

The Outer Worlds 2 Walks Back $80 Price, Now Launching at $70

The Outer Worlds 2 from Obsidian Entertainment was set to be the third game to follow the trend started by Mario Kart World of having a launch price of $80. Last month, The Outer Worlds 2 was one of the big titles shown at the Xbox Games Showcase and even had its own dedicated show after the event. Obisidan revealed the release date of Oct. 29 and the hefty price tag of $80, but the developer has since changed

Trump’s order to make chatbots anti-woke is unconstitutional, senator says

The CEOs of every major artificial intelligence company received letters Wednesday urging them to fight Donald Trump's anti-woke AI order. Trump's executive order requires any AI company hoping to contract with the federal government to jump through two hoops to win funding. First, they must prove their AI systems are "truth-seeking"—with outputs based on "historical accuracy, scientific inquiry, and objectivity" or else acknowledge when facts are uncertain. Second, they must train AI models to

Hackers—hope to defect to Russia? Don’t Google “defecting to Russia.”

To the casual observer, cybercriminals can look like swashbuckling geniuses. They possess technical skills formidable enough to penetrate the networks of the biggest companies on the planet. They cover their tracks using technology that is arcane to most people—VPNs, encrypted chat apps, onion routing, aliases in dark web forums. They talk trash, extorting corporate ransoms in cryptocurrency, and they aim high, not flinching even at the prospect of stealing data on US presidential candidates.

America’s AI watchdog is losing its bite

It found that the security giant Evolv lied about the accuracy of its AI-powered security checkpoints, which are used in stadiums and schools but failed to catch a seven-inch knife that was ultimately used to stab a student. It went after the facial recognition company Intellivision, saying the company made unfounded claims that its tools operated without gender or racial bias. It fined startups promising bogus “AI lawyer” services and one that sold fake product reviews generated with AI. These
