Google backpedals on plans to totally kill this legacy service

It’s hard to believe, but Google launched its URL Shortener tool all the way back in 2009. Although the tool was shut down in 2018, Google confirmed that goo.gl URLs would continue to redirect to their intended destinations. However, the tech giant announced last year that it would stop supporting those links after August 25, 2025. That was the plan anyway, but the company has since had a slight change of heart. Google has updated the blog post where it announced the shutdown of Google URL Shor

Android TV is getting ready to kill off the Discover tab… last month? (APK teardown)

Aamir Siddiqui / Android Authority TL;DR Android TV currently offers a Discover tab for getting recommendations and building your watchlist. A new update to the system launcher suggests that Google’s planning to drop Discover and move your watchlist to the Home tab. Confusingly, Google’s messaging in the app suggest that this change was supposed to take place in July. What does your usage of Android TV look like? Google’s big-screen entertainment platform certainly tries to act as a hub that

Some goo.gl URLs will live to fight another day

Google's shortened URLs are the horror movie monster of the Google Graveyard: They keep finding a way to stay alive. On Friday, the company said goo.gl links that don't show the above warning will work for the foreseeable future. In 2018, Google cut off the ability to create new shortened links. But it kept existing URLs active as a courtesy to those who relied on them. Then, a year ago, the company said its bit.ly rival would shut down completely on August 25, 2025. That appeared to be the fin

Google is largely reversing course on its plans to discontinue support for all shortened goo.gl URLs on August 25th. Like other advanced models, Gemini 2.5 Deep Think uses more than one AI agent to brainstorm answers in order to boost accuracy and result in more creative solutions. Google releases Gemini 2.5 Deep Think for AI Ultra subscribers

Best Smart Glasses in 2025

I’ve reviewed virtual and augmented reality tech for well over a decade, going all the way back to Google Glass in 2013. And yet, the category of smart glasses still feels strange and new. Part of that is because smart glasses take on many different forms. They’re all lightweight things that have tech in them and rest on your nos

Google Messages will finally tell you when your custom ROM is the problem (APK teardown)

Aamir Siddiqui / Android Authority TL;DR Last year, Google began preventing devices that failed Play Integrity checks from sending RCS messages. Google Messages would simply drop texts, without delivering any errors or warnings. Messages now appears to be adding an explicit notice when security requirements are not met. What’s more annoying than when an app stops working? Well — a lot of things, actually — but in this narrow context we’re specifically talking about when an app intentionally

Our Farewell from Google Play

Our project started in 2016 with the goal of offering alternatives to apps with basic functionality that demanded – back then at install time – many permissions they did not need. From our humble beginnings with Privacy Friendly Torchlight, our apps have always been available in the Google Play Store. Our current selection of Privacy Friendly Apps has grown since then to more than 30. And with more than 350,000 installs we believe we left a dent. We want to take this opportunity to also thank al

I tried iOS 26 as an Android user, and my biggest issue has nothing to do with Liquid Glass

Ryan Haines / Android Authority I’m a Pixel guy, have been for years — everyone knows it. So, you can imagine I was pretty pleased when Google unveiled Material 3 Expressive, and it looked like a refinement of the Pixel UI design that I already loved. And then came Apple with its new Liquid Glass interface as part of iOS 26. Simply put, I thought it looked awful. It was hard to read, and the original glass effects looked clunky. Now, though, I’ve given iOS 26 a shot. I’ve loaded it onto my iP

Google’s Newest AI Model Acts Like a Satellite to Track Climate Change

Google’s newest AI model is going to scour the Earth and, ideally, help it out. That's the plan, anyway. The mission is to find out once and for all, in fine detail, what we are doing to our planet. Crucially, once the model has supposedly done this it will also, apparently, explain where we might be able to best put things in place to help our world. AlphaEarth Foundations, an offshoot of Google’s DeepMind AI model, aims to leverage machine learning and all the gobs and gobs of data that Googl

Google must open Play Store to Epic Games and others after appeal loss

Be on the lookout for the Epic Games Store, as it should appear on the Google Play Store soon. After losing its appeal of a judge’s order, Google will now have to overhaul its app store policies. This includes letting third-party app stores onto its platform. Today, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals decided (via Bloomberg ) to uphold the ruling from the original Epic v. Google lawsuit. This decision found the Play Store and the tech giant’s payment systems to be monopolies. As a result, Google
