Samsung's Texas chip plant is reportedly delayed due to lack of customers

Samsung has reportedly pushed back the completion of its semiconductor plant in Taylor, Texas, because it has no customers. According to Nikkei Asia, the company is in no hurry to install equipment in the facility due to lack of clients and even though the facility is over 90 percent done. The factory was supposed to come online in 2024, but the company has since pushed back its opening date to sometime in 2026 to upgrade its foundry process. Samsung's fab was only supposed to be able to manufac

I Brought My Dad Back to Life With This Phone. I Don't Know How to Feel

My dad died just after my fourth birthday in 1992. Being so young, I have few memories of him and my family has only a small handful of home movie clips, filmed in the brief window before he died. But I do have a selection of still pictures and in my testing of a new phone, the Honor 400 Pro, I found I was able to bring him to life using AI. Honestly? I really don't know how to feel about it. Alas, making sense of <waves hands> all this is beyond the scope of this humble little newsletter. As always, we welcom

Inside India’s scramble for AI independence

Nonetheless, a small but determined group of Indian builders is starting to shape the country’s AI future. For example, Sarvam AI has created OpenHathi-Hi-v0.1, an open-source Hindi language model that shows the Indian AI field’s growing ability to address the country’s vast linguistic diversity. The model, built on Meta’s Llama 2 architecture, was trained on 40 billion tokens of Hindi and related Indian-language content, making it one of the largest open-source Hindi models available to date.

I tried the controversial Android phone that's got the internet buzzing - and left impressed

Prakhar Khanna/ZDNET Nothing's new flagship phone is its most expensive and risky product yet. At $799, the Nothing Phone 3 no longer undercuts its midrange competitors. Instead, the handset takes on the likes of the iPhone Pro, Pixel Pro, and Galaxy S phones of the world with a striking design, functional AI features, and fine software tuning. Also: I tested Nothing's first over-ear headphones, and they made my AirPods Max look boring And it does so while sacrificing its most iconic feature,

The Rise of Whatever

This was originally titled “I miss when computers were fun”. But in the course of writing it, I discovered that there is a reason computers became less fun, a dark thread woven through a number of events in recent history. Let me back up a bit. Back in the 00’s, if you wanted to move money between arbitrary people over the Internet, you realistically had one option: PayPal. Either that, or live in some futuristic utopia like the EU where banks consider "send money to people" to be core functi

How AI on Microcontrollers Works: Operators and Kernels

The buzz around “edge AI”, which means something slightly different to almost everyone you talk to, is well past reaching a fever pitch. Regardless of what edge AI means to you, the one commonality is typically that the hardware on which inference is being performed is constrained in one or more dimensions, whether it be compute, memory, or network bandwidth. Perhaps the most constrained of these platforms are microcontrollers. I have found that, while there is much discourse around “running AI

DRM Panic QR code generator

This is a simple QR code generator, to display the panic data as a QR code. It is specific to the DRM panic use case, and supports only some parts of the QR code specification. Kernel panic traces are usually displayed on the screen, but then it's hard to copy and paste them to a bug report, so that a developer can take a look, and fix the bug. As QR code are now widespread, using that allows to easily copy and paste the panic traces in a bug report, which makes debugging much easier for both

I'm Still Obsessed With This Cult Conspiracy Thriller and Now It's on Netflix

Every once in a while, a TV show comes out of nowhere and changes the very fabric of the medium. Off the top of my head, I can think of five: Twin Peaks, Lost, The Sopranos, Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad. After Vince Gilligan's hit drug drama ended in 2013, I wondered what series would capture the cultural zeitgeist next. The answer came in the form of an edgy show about the internet, of all things. It starred a relatively unknown character actor as a flawed, neurodivergent hacker genius who

This Is Why Tesla’s Robotaxi Launch Needed Human Babysitters

Whether due to consumer backlash or an aging EV lineup, or both, Tesla sales have again seen a global plunge, this time 13 percent last quarter compared to the previous year—proof that the electric automaker hasn’t yet turned around a dismal year that saw public opinion of controversial CEO Elon Musk plummet. It could mean Tesla faces a second straight year of falling sales. And yet: Tesla is still the world’s most valuable automaker by market capitalization, worth some $990 billion. At least s

Other Heat Protectants We Tried Photograph: Kat Merck R+Co Bleu Hypersonic Heat Styling Mist for $36: This high-tech-looking aerosol in a recycled aluminum bottle was a favorite during the early weeks of testing—I liked its protection up to 450 degrees Fahrenheit and its frizz-fighting properties. New Galaxy Z Fold 7 leaks may give first real look at Samsung’s slimmer foldable

Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 7 has been given the thinner, sleeker glow-up we expected, if leaked hands-on photos are any indication. The trio of images posted by leaker @Jukanlosreve seemingly show what the next-gen Galaxy foldable will look like in the real world from a few different angles. The new photographs mostly line up with what we’ve seen in previous renders, including the larger, slimmer chassis that’s reported to be around 4.5mm thick when open. That’s slimmer than its 5.6mm Gal

Major reversal in ocean circulation detected in the Southern Ocean

Satellite data processing algorithms developed by ICM-CSIC have played a crucial role in detecting this significant shift in the Southern Hemisphere, which could accelerate the effects of climate change. Thanks to data obtained from Earth observation satellites, an international team of scientists has detected an unprecedented phenomenon for the first time: a reversal in the ocean circulation of the Southern Ocean. The study, led by the National Oceanographic Center (NOC, United Kingdom), was r

Caching is an abstraction, not an optimization

June 30, 2025 Caching is an Abstraction, not an Optimization I've always been told that caching is a tool to make software faster. That, given some careful considerations to consistency, caching makes it so that when you want to read a given piece of data, you don't have to go all the way back to some backend database or API server or SSD and can instead just read from some faster location like memory for the same data. Caching is thus a tool to improve performance. My feelings now are that t
