FCC chairman helps AT&T cement dominance with $23 billion spectrum deal

EchoStar has agreed to sell $23 billion worth of spectrum licenses to AT&T in a deal spurred by threats made by the Federal Communications Commission to revoke EchoStar's rights to use the spectrum. AT&T said it will use the spectrum to boost its 5G mobile network and expand its fixed wireless home Internet service. The AT&T/EchoStar deal, which is expected to be completed in mid-2026, could mark the beginning of EchoStar's spectrum portfolio being carved up and sold to other carriers. Starlink

EchoStar stock skyrockets 75% on AT&T deal to buy wireless spectrum for $23 billion

EchoStar said in a regulatory filing that the transaction is part of the company's "ongoing efforts to resolve the Federal Communications Commission's inquiries." The sale will add about 50 megahertz of mid-band and low-band spectrum to AT&T's network, with the licenses covering more than 400 markets across the U.S., AT&T said. The deal is expected to close in mid-2026, pending regulatory approval. EchoStar stock roared more than 75% higher on Tuesday after AT&T said it agreed to purchase cert

Amazon AGI Labs chief defends his reverse acqui-hire

In Brief When Amazon hired the founders of AI startup Adept last year, it was one of the first examples of what became known as a reverse acqui-hire — a deal where a large company hires key startup team members and licenses its technology, rather than acquiring the startup outright. Adept’s co-founder and former CEO David Luan subsequently became the head of Amazon’s new AGI Lab, and while Luan’s recent interview with The Verge is ostensibly focused on Amazon’s vision for AI agents, reporter A

Yottar wants to help energy users find capacity on the electrical grid

From AI to EVs, the world’s demand for power is soaring, and the electrical grid is feeling the squeeze. Enter Yottar, a startup that maps electrical grid capacity to help companies figure out where they can plug in new data centers, EV charging stations, and other power-hungry equipment. “The electrification super cycle is colliding with the AI data center boom. That’s making the grid operators really struggle to deal with the backlog,” Peter Clutton-Brock, Yottar’s co-founder and CEO, told T

STARBASE, Texas—A beehive of aerospace technicians, construction workers, and spaceflight fans descended on South Texas this weekend in advance of the next test flight of SpaceX's gigantic Starship rocket, the largest vehicle of its kind ever built. Towering 404 feet (123.1 meters) tall, the rocket will lift off during a one-hour launch window beginning at 6:30 pm CDT (7:30 pm EDT; 23:30 UTC) Sunday. Scientists Detect Precise Origin of Mysterious Signal From Deep Space

For almost two decades, astronomers have been trying in vain to explain extremely bright flashes of radio bursts emanating from deep space. Despite only lighting up for a tiny fraction of a second, these fast radio bursts (FRBs) have been known to release as much energy as the Sun puts out in an entire year. Now, in what's being called a "turning point," an international team of researchers has traced back the location of the origin of one of the brightest FRBs ever detected, allowing them to

Rolling the dice with CSS random()

Random functions in programming languages are amazing. You can use them to generate variations, to make things feel spontaneous and fresh. Until now there was no way to create a random number in CSS. Now, the random() function is on its way. You’ll be able to create a random animation delay, layout content at a random place on the screen, create a random color, or anything you want — all without any JavaScript. The Basics This new function has three arguments in this pattern: random(min, max,

SpaceX Is Losing a Staggering Amount of Money Every Time One of Its Starships Explodes

Time is ticking for SpaceX's Starship. Even after nearly ten launches, the behemoth spacecraft has yet to successfully visit space and then come safely back to Earth even a single time — but NASA is nonetheless relying on it to ferry astronauts from the Moon's orbit down to the surface just over two years from now. Given Starship's track record so far — nine full-scale test flights have ended in explosions shortly after launch, explosions in space, and crashes into the ocean — it's a steep goa

Watch Live as SpaceX Tries to Prove Starship Isn’t a Total Flop With Flight 10

SpaceX is gearing up for the tenth test flight of its megarocket following a streak of failures that have cast doubt on Starship’s ability to fly to Mars in 2026. Starship is slated for lift-off on Sunday, August 24, during a launch window that opens at 7:30 p.m. ET. SpaceX recently wrapped up investigations into the rocket’s previous test flight, which took place on May 27 and ended with the vehicle breaking apart during reentry. This was the third Starship flight of 2025 and the latest in a s

‘Star Wars: Visions’ Season 3 Puts a Stormtrooper on Death’s Door

Over its currently two-season run, Star Wars: Visions has shown audiences the adventures of Force users, droids, and rebels. One viewpoint we’ve not seen much of is the Imperial forces, despite their repeatedly turning up in the show’s various shorts—but that’s changing with the new season, and things will get pretty cerebral. During this weekend’s Anime NYC, panelists got a look at “Black,” a short for the next set of episodes dropping in October. Developed by david production (Fire Force), th

‘Star Trek’ Journalists, Ranked

The potential for what journalism looks like in Star Trek is a heady idea that’s been around as long as the series itself. What does reporting the news look like in utopia? What does it mean that the Federation has its own news networks, alongside a host of interstellar media organizations? What does freedom of information mean in a universe that has Starfleet? And yet, we’ve actually had very few characters appear in the series as fully dedicated journalists and reporters. That changed a littl

Aspiration co-founder to plead guilty to $248M fraud scheme

Sustainability-focused fintech Aspiration was flying high a few years ago, attracting famous investors including Orlando Bloom, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Robert Downey Jr. Now, its co-founder will plead guilty to helping perpetuate a $248 million fraud scheme, according to U.S. attorneys. Joseph Sanberg, who was arrested in March, has agreed to plead guilty to two counts of wire fraud, felony counts that could land him in prison for up to 20 years each. “This so-called ‘anti-poverty’ activist has
