Cloudflare says 1.1.1.1 outage not caused by attack or BGP hijack

To quash speculation of a cyberattack or BGP hijack incident causing the recent 1.1.1.1 Resolver service outage, Cloudflare explains in a post mortem that the incident was caused by an internal misconfiguration. The outage occurred on July 14 and impacted most users of the service all over the world, rendering internet services unavailable in many cases. “The root cause was an internal configuration error and not the result of an attack or a BGP hijack,” Cloudflare says in the announcement. A Mile-Long Gateway to Hell Opens Up in Iceland

A volcanic eruption in Southwestern Iceland forced the evacuation of a nearby town and the world-famous Blue Lagoon geothermal spa on Wednesday, July 16. Media images captured huge plumes of smoke and glowing lava flows spewing from an enormous crack in Earth’s surface roughly 30 miles (18.6 miles) southwest of Reykjavík. This marks the twelfth eruption since volcanic activity reawakened in this region in 2021. The eruption began on the Reykjanes Peninsula’s Sundhnúkur crater row around 4 a.m.

Tariff Troubles Ahead: Auto Experts Advice on Rising EV and Car Prices

It's not just iPhones and TVs that might cost more. President Donald Trump's tariff policies might be driving up the cost of electric vehicles and combustion cars, too. EVs, in fact, might be especially vulnerable to the new tariffs that target China (a major exporter of critical metals) and the steel industry. China already has a near monopoly on critical minerals and rare earth metals used to manufacture cars, and these tariffs have given China a reason to use that as leverage over the US. Th

Leading AI Models Are Completely Flunking the Three Laws of Robotics

In his genre-defining 1950 collection of science fiction short stories "I, Robot," author Isaac Asimov laid out the Three Laws of Robotics: 1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. 2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. 3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law. Ever since, the elegant

Forget copyright strikes, a retro gaming YouTuber faces possible jail time for reviewing gaming handhelds

TL;DR Retro gaming YouTuber Once Were Nerd has been sued and raided by the Italian government. Consoles were seized and channels may be closed for promoting piracy of copyrighted material. Some of these devices ship with pre-loaded ROMs, which appears to be the source of the complaint. While gaming content continues to grow and thrive on video platforms like Twitch and YouTube, copyright remains a sticky issue. Most companies look the other way when it comes to game streaming, but emulation i

Will your car get CarPlay Ultra? Here’s what we know

Earlier this year, Apple officially announced CarPlay Ultra, the next-generation version of CarPlay that it first teased way back at WWDC 2022. CarPlay Ultra began rolling out in May to Aston Martin owners in the United States and Canada. What about other automakers? Here’s what we know. China’s Wild World of AR Glasses Has Me Convinced Meta Is Cooked

I know I’ve said it 1,000 times, but AR glasses are hot right now, and arguably no one is more on fire than China. While the U.S. is patiently waiting for Meta to release anything even resembling its prototype AR glasses, Orion, China seems to be making strides day by day. The latest example? These glasses with full-color optical waveguide lenses and 900 nits of brightness from a Chinese company called Wigain. In plain speak, they’re full-color AR glasses with enough brightness to actually use o

Apple's iOS 26 and iPadOS 26 public betas will release any minute now: What to expect

The Galaxy Watch 8 Pissed Me Off, but I'd Still Recommend It

CNET’s expert staff reviews and rates dozens of new products and services each month, building on more than a quarter century of expertise. The Running Coach on the Galaxy Watch 8 needs to be kicked to the curb. I'm not expecting an Olympic endorsement deal anytime soon, but after 20 years of running (four half marathons, multiple 10K and 5Ks), I'd hope to graduate beyond "beginner." Tidy up your Mac office space with a Thunderbolt dock hidden under your desk

Like many people these days, I work from home and use a 16-inch MacBook Pro with an external display. I have been a long-time user of the OWC Thunderbolt Dock which lets me connect my display and various peripherals to the hub’s I/O ports, with only a single cable plugged in to the laptop. This dock has simply sat atop the desk, until recently. I came across a further improvement to my setup which helps declutter even more. Quite simply, I discovered this cable management tray that lets the doc

If you're over the expensive flagships, this $199 Motorola is a legit budget option

ZDNET's key takeaways Motorola's Moto G is available now for $199. The smartphone boasts a long-lasting battery, booming speakers, and a solid camera array. Ziploc, Rubbermaid Sued Over Microplastics: Should You Ditch Plastic Containers?

When you buy plastic food containers, you tend to look for whether they're microwave and freezer-safe. The maker of Rubbermaid, Newell Brands, is now facing a class action lawsuit for claiming that its plastic-based containers are "microwave safe" and "freezer-safe." According to the complaint, these products can release microplastics into food even when used as per the instructions, despite the products' marketing claiming otherwise. Ziploc is also facing a similar class action lawsuit. Ziploc

Hackers exploit a blind spot by hiding malware inside DNS records

Hackers are stashing malware in a place that’s largely out of the reach of most defenses—inside domain name system (DNS) records that map domain names to their corresponding numerical IP addresses. The practice allows malicious scripts and early-stage malware to fetch binary files without having to download them from suspicious sites or attach them to emails, where they frequently get quarantined by antivirus software. That’s because traffic for DNS lookups often goes largely unmonitored by man

There could be “dark main sequence” stars at the galactic center

For a star, its initial mass is everything. It determines how quickly it burns through its hydrogen and how it will evolve once it starts fusing heavier elements. It's so well understood that scientists have devised a "main sequence" that acts a bit like a periodic table for stars, correlating their mass and age with their properties. The main sequence, however, is based on an assumption that's almost always true: All of the energy involved comes from the gravity-driven fusion of lighter elemen

Get the macOS Finder to Do Just About Anything by Typing Natural Language Commands

I'm genuinely not sure if large language models—often referred to as “AI” in shorthand—are the future of computing. But I also don't think chatbots are how people will use this technology in the years to come. Substage, an indie Mac application by developer Joseph Humfrey, is a simple app that points to a potential alternative—one that's useful right now. This application floats under every Finder window, meaning you see it only when you're browsing files in macOS. You can type English-languag

Chinese authorities are using a new tool to hack seized phones and extract data

Security researchers say Chinese authorities are using a new type of malware to extract data from seized phones, allowing them to obtain text messages — including from chat apps such as Signal — images, location histories, audio recordings, contacts, and more. On Wednesday, mobile cybersecurity company Lookout published a new report — shared exclusively with TechCrunch — detailing the hacking tool called Massistant, which the company said was developed by Chinese tech giant Xiamen Meiya Pico.
