A United Nations research institute created an AI refugee avatar

In Brief A research institute connected to the United Nations has created two AI-powered avatars designed to teach people about refugee issues. 404 Media wrote about an experiment conducted by a class at the United Nations University Center for Policy Research that resulted in the creation of two AI agents or avatars — Amina, a fictional woman who fled Sudan and is living in a refugee camp in Chad, and Abdalla, a fictional soldier with the Rapid Support Forces, a paramilitary force in Sudan.

Brainwash '72 [video]

Probably the strangest thing I've found on a video tape. A quit-smoking "brainwashing" tape, my favourite bit is the whole long shot of a mysterious stranger walking through the desert only to reveal A •SPOILERS•. Content warning: there's some footage of someone getting operated on. It makes me feel all squooshy so I'm warning you. This came to me on a Umatic tape with a McDonalds label on it, perhaps a franchisee somewhere was trying to stop his staff smoking. Anyway, enjoy. --

Google Chrome hit by another serious security flaw - update your browser ASAP

Kyle Kucharski/ZDNET Google has patched yet another critical security bug in Chrome, which means all of you who use the browser should update it ASAP. On Monday, the company revealed a high-severity vulnerability that could allow a remote attacker to run malicious code on your system. In its release notes for the latest version of Chrome, Google pointed to the security flaw tagged as CVE-2025-6554. This is an implementation of the classic 2048 game in your terminal: Share your game state with friends by just sending them a number! If the $STATE env variable isn't set, it generates a fresh random seed. Otherwise the board state and all future spawned cells will be deterministic.

US government’s vaccine website defaced with AI-generated content

In Brief A U.S. government website designed to inform the public about vaccines has been defaced and now hosts apparently AI-generated spam.
