A volunteer-run project called amigaux.org is bringing Amix — Commodore's System V Release 4 Unix for the Amiga, originally sold in 1990-92 for the A2500UX and A3000UX — back to life on 68040 and 68060 machines and modern accelerator boards. The effort adds a modern toolchain, a package manager (apkg) that pulls prebuilt tools like grep, gzip and less from a repository, and new drivers for hardware the OS never originally supported, including Z3660 and A4091/A4092 accelerators.
Lemmings, created by Scotland's DMA Design and published by Psygnosis, became a massive hit after its 1991 debut on the Commodore Amiga, eventually appearing on more than 20 platforms and outselling every other Psygnosis title by a huge margin. Its puzzle-strategy gameplay and charming creatures made it a mainstream cultural phenomenon, complete with holiday spin-off games and a dedicated hint call center for frustrated players. Despite that early success, the franchise failed to sustain long-term relevance the way contemporaries like Tetris and SimCity did.
Developer Rabah Shihab is porting his 1993 Amiga 500 game Babylonian Twins, written entirely in raw 68000 assembly under wartime sanctions in Baghdad, to the modern Godot engine. He is using a large language model to help parse and interpret the decades-old low-level assembly code that directly manipulated Amiga hardware like the copper list, blitter and CIA chips. This follows an earlier manual port to iPhone made in 2010 by the same original team.
Developer Daniel Palmer has written new patches for Linux's Tdfxfb driver that let the kernel initialize 3dfx Voodoo3 graphics cards even on systems lacking a standard BIOS, such as the Amiga 4000. Palmer used AI assistance to read data directly from the card's own BIOS to force it out of an 'unbooted' state and produce a video signal, and the code is set to ship in Linux 7.3. He is also extending the work toward Voodoo4/5 support and Voodoo3 emulation in QEMU.
Developers have ported AROS, the open-source Amiga Research Operating System, to run directly on Raspberry Pi hardware without virtualization, in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. Previously, running AROS on a Pi required emulating it inside Linux; now it boots bare-metal, targeting the Pi3 with discussions underway for Pi4 and Zero2W support.
