After moving to one of North America’s largest river islands late last year, I decided that I should check out more of my new home by water. I have long been a fan of the freedom that a small dinghy or bass boat offers, even on larger rivers like the mighty Columbia here in Oregon. My hunting/fishing/contracting Uncle Rob had a small, 8.5-foot dinghy for me to borrow, so I was set on that front. The issue was the motor: My home and car run entirely on electricity and solar power, as do all of m

First, some exciting news that’s relevant as context: starting in November, I’ll be joining Mapbox in their Washington, DC office. One thing that made me excited about joining Mapbox was how much I enjoyed their interview process. No part of it felt like it required extra “preparation” and it was clear that some significant thought had been put into its design. In my opinion, this is a pretty useful signal about an engineering organization. If we accept that finding great engineers (by whatever

At the tip of Brittany’s wild, wet Côtes-d’Armor peninsula is the village of Plougrescant. Beyond that, butting right out into the sea, lies Yvinec island, a tiny outcrop intermittently accessible depending on tides via a rock-studded expanse of dunes and seaweed. To get there I have taken two planes, a train and a puzzling automobile. It has been an epic journey, but I can’t possibly say that to Guirec Soudée when he picks me up for the last leg in his 4x4. I may have got lost in a Brest indust

The Norwegian boat start-up Pascal Technologies wants to equip two of its electric boats with Airhull technology. The boats Nabcrew Zero AirBlue 1240 and Hugin DC will be able to glide on a layer of air. The technology lifts the hull of the boat out of the water when underway, thereby reducing drag – thus increasing efficiency and requiring less energy to operate the boat. Airhull should be easier to implement than hydrofoil technology, which also lifts a boat out of the water. Anzeige Electri

On my first time out as a commercial fisherman, my boat sank, my captain died, and I was left adrift and alone in the Pacific. This article was featured in the One Story to Read Today newsletter. Sign up for it here. The Evening was small in the shadow of the other boats. When I arrived at the dock, it was well past midnight, and a misty rain was falling—the edge of a storm far out at sea. Mick, the captain, was blunt and salty; not old, but weathered. He led me on board and pointed down the l

Electric boat startup Arc has a new model that is its cheapest and most approachable watercraft yet. The new boat is called the Arc Coast, and it will start at $168,000. The company is taking preorders now and says the Coast will ship in 2026. The Coast is what’s known as a “center console” boat, which is often used for fishing. It’s the company’s third model, following the limited edition $300,000 Arc One and the $268,000 Arc Sport (which I got to pilot earlier this year). That’s despite comi

Winnie the Pooh. Popeye. Steamboat Willie. These days, it seems the instant a recognizable character becomes public domain, someone immediately turns them into a horror movie. Why is that, and what is it like behind the scenes? To get those answers, io9 spoke with Steven LaMorte. He’s the co-writer and director of Screamboat, a Steamboat Willie slasher film that’s in theaters April 2. As we covered in the first half of our interview, it’s a film that might be a love letter to Disney, but that d

The blessing and curse of the public domain is that you can make a movie like Screamboat without permission from Disney, but you also want to remind people of Disney. One of the main reasons it works at all is the subversive naughtiness behind seeing a character like Steamboat Willie, whom we’ve always associated with Mickey Mouse and Disney, as something evil and violent. So how do you do that exactly? Where’s the line? Well, the latest trailer for Screamboat, which opens April 2, is a masterc

Dyson has an extensive, and often confusing, lineup of vacuums. There’s a future where we don’t need roads and regular folks like you and me can jump into a boat-sized electric pod and just fly anywhere on a whim. While we’ve been perfecting the miracle of human flight for more than a century, instant air transportation has long been relegated to science fiction. But in the last decade, many companies have stepped up to help get flying cars and air taxis out of the Hollywood movie magic bubble. Startups like Joby Aviation and Archer are building electric ve
