Things you can do with a Software Defined Radio (2024)

Fifty Things you can do with a Software Defined Radio šŸ“» Last week, I went on an adventure through the electromagnetic spectrum! It’s like an invisible world that always surrounds us, and allows us to do many amazing things: It’s how radio and TV are transmitted, it’s how we communicate using Wi-Fi or our phones. And there are many more things to discover there, from all over the world. In this post, I’ll show you fifty things you can find there – all you need is this simple USB dongle and an

Get a Google Pixel 10? You need to change this display setting immediately

Joe Maring / Android Authority There’s a lot to like about the Google Pixel 10. The triple-camera system on the back is one of the most impressive we’ve seen for a non-Pro Pixel. Magnetic Qi2 charging is a fantastic addition, the Tensor G5 is a significant upgrade, and the Indigo color this year is oh-so-pretty. Google has also been at the top of its display game for a while now, and the Pixel 10 is no exception. With a 6.3-inch OLED panel, a 120Hz refresh rate, and up to 3,000 nits of peak br

Elehear Beyond Pro Review: Big Hearing Aids

In the world of hearing aids, size is second only to audio quality. Manufacturers regularly tout when they shave a few hundredths of a gram off a model, and many jockey for top position as ā€œthe smallest hearing aid on the market.ā€ Never mind any of that, Elehear said in 2024 when it released its Elehear Beyond. At 4.75 grams, the devices were some of the largest I’ve ever tested (nearly double the weight of some competing models), which made them cumbersome and uncomfortable, a major theme in m

FCC chairman helps AT&T cement dominance with $23 billion spectrum deal

EchoStar has agreed to sell $23 billion worth of spectrum licenses to AT&T in a deal spurred by threats made by the Federal Communications Commission to revoke EchoStar's rights to use the spectrum. AT&T said it will use the spectrum to boost its 5G mobile network and expand its fixed wireless home Internet service. The AT&T/EchoStar deal, which is expected to be completed in mid-2026, could mark the beginning of EchoStar's spectrum portfolio being carved up and sold to other carriers. Starlink

AT&T is spending $23 billion on new spectrum, but what will it do with it?

Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority TL;DR AT&T will pay roughly $23B to acquire 30 MHz of 3.45 GHz (mid-band) and 20 MHz of 600 MHz (low-band) spectrum from EchoStar/Dish, and the companies say they’ll deepen Boost’s wholesale access agreement with AT&T’s network. Details on the enhanced MVNO deal are vague, but it likely means Boost will lean more on AT&T coverage; priority/QoS improvements are possible but unconfirmed. Don’t expect instant customer-visible changes, but the added spectrum sh

Control shopping cart wheels with your phone (2021)

About Play the below sounds through your phone speaker and hold it next to a Gatekeeper Systems wheels to lock/unlock. Check me out on twitter @stoppingcart How It Works Most electronic shopping cart wheels listen for a 7.8 kHz signal from an underground wire to know when to lock and unlock. A management remote can send a different signal at 7.8 kHz to the wheel to unlock it. Since 7.8 kHz is in the audio range, you can use the parasitic EMF from your phone's speaker to "transmit" a similar cod

Candle Flame Oscillations as a Clock

Todays candles have been optimized for millenia not to flicker. But it turns out when we bundle three of them together, we can undo all of these optimizations and the resulting triplet will start to naturally oscillate. A fascinating fact is that the oscillation frequency is rather stable at ~9.9Hz as it mainly depends on gravity and diameter of the flame. We use a rather unusual approach based on a wire suspended in the flame, that can sense capacitance changes caused by the ionized gases in t

AMD Ryzen Threadripper 9980X and 9970X Review

AMD's latest Ryzen Threadripper 9000 series arrives with a familiar formula: massive core counts, eye-watering specs, and price tags to match. Built on the Zen 5 microarchitecture, these chips pack up to 64 cores and 128 threads, along with 80 lanes of PCIe 5.0 connectivity. As with previous generations, the lineup is split in two: a high-end desktop (HEDT) range, simply called Threadripper 9000, and a workstation-class series known as Threadripper Pro 9000WX. Our focus here is on the HEDT chi

Ultra-Rapid Vision in Birds

Flying animals need to accurately detect, identify and track fast-moving objects and these behavioral requirements are likely to strongly select for abilities to resolve visual detail in time. However, evidence of highly elevated temporal acuity relative to non-flying animals has so far been confined to insects while it has been missing in birds. With behavioral experiments on three wild passerine species, blue tits, collared and pied flycatchers, we demonstrate temporal acuities of vision far e

N78 band 5G NR recordings

In my last post about 5G NR, which was part of a series in which I analyzed the signals in a short recording of an idle srsRAN gNB, I mentioned that I had already decoded all the signals that appear in the recording, and that to move on with my 5G series I would need to make and use some more complex real world recordings next. A 5G band I’m particularly interested in is n78 (3.3 – 3.8 GHz TDD). This is being used to deploy 5G in many European countries, including Spain, as showed by this list

Wi-Fi Experts Reveal How Trump’s Budget Bill Could Slow Down Your Wi-Fi

You won’t find the term ā€œWi-Fiā€ anywhere in the text of President Donald Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill, but a provision authorizing the FCC to auction off spectrum could seriously impact speeds on newer Wi-Fi routers. Every wireless device, from garage door openers to baby monitors, relies on the electromagnetic spectrum to work. But that spectrum is a limited resource -- to open up capacity for one technology, you have to take it away from another. The latest generation of Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi

3 Best Hall Effect Keyboards for Gamers and Serious Typists (2025)

Polling rate is likely one of the most prominently displayed details on any Hall effect keyboard, purely because the large numbers emphasize one of the most important aspects of these keyboards: Speed. Whether a keyboard has a 1,000- or 10,000-Hz polling rate, this number represents how many messages are sent from the keyboard to the PC every second. For example, a keyboard with 1,000-Hz polling will send 1000 messages every second. Most office equipment operates at 125 Hz. In high-performance g

What Trump's 'big beautiful bill' means for Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 users (Hint: It's not pretty)

Francesco Carta fotografo/Getty Images I thought we'd dodged a networking bullet when the US Budget bill, aka the "One Big Beautiful Bill (BBB)," didn't include a freeze on AI regulation, which had been tied to broadband funding from the $42.5 billion Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program. However, I missed the point that the bill still includes provisions that could force the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to auction off significant portions of the 6GHz spectrum cur

Wi-Fi in the US Could Get Worse Under Trump's New Law

The Federal Communications Commission has regained its authority to hold spectrum auctions and could use that power to take spectrum away from Wi-Fi networks and license it to mobile carriers AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile. As we previously wrote, the Senate budget bill pitched by Ted Cruz (R-Texas) called for at least 800 MHz to be auctioned and allowed part of it to be taken from the 6 GHz band that's being used to boost speeds in the new generation of Wi-Fi networks. Senate GOP budget bill has little-noticed provision that could hurt your Wi-Fi

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) has a plan for spectrum auctions that could take frequencies away from Wi-Fi and reallocate them for the exclusive use of wireless carriers. The plan would benefit AT&T, which is based in Cruz's home state, along with Verizon and T-Mobile. Cruz's proposal revives a years-old controversy over whether the entire 6 GHz band should be devoted to Wi-Fi, which can use the large spectrum band for faster speeds than networks that rely solely on the 2.4 and 5 GHz bands. Congress

The Quality of Service feature lets you prioritize activities like gaming or streaming, or set priority devices. Importantly, you can split the 2.4-GHz and 5-GHz bands to show as two separate Wi-Fi networks. This is handy, as some smart home devices only operate on the former band. Similarly, there's a mixed mode for WPA2 and WPA3 security. Some devices don't work with the newer WPA3 standard, and some routers force you to choose one or the other, which can lead to issues. This mode ensures all

Trump’s ā€˜big beautiful bill’ could mean slower Wi-Fi for you

The Senate version of the budget reconciliation bill, backed by President Donald Trump, removes protections for unlicensed spectrum that broadens the capacity of the 6GHz Wi-Fi band. This could result in slower Wi-Fi speeds. Under the bill, which may be voted on at the end of this week, the FCC would sell off some of that spectrum to mobile carriers such as AT&T, which could use it to improve the speed of their mobile data. The bill includes a provision requiring the FCC to auction 800MHz of sp
