1948: Catholic Church publishes final edition of “Index Librorum Prohibitorum”

A: Città del Vaticano, Vatican City In 1948 The Catholic Church published the 32nd and final edition of the Index Librorum Prohibitorum, the first of which had appeared in 1559. The edition was printed on inexpensive paper by the Typis Polyglotis Vaticanis, in Vatican City, and issued in drab printed boards. Its 24 preliminary pages contained a preface in Italian and another in Latin, strongly suggesting that the book was intended mainly for priests, all of whom would have read Latin at this ti

Our European search index goes live

We’ve started delivering search results from our new European-based search index to Ecosia users! This will help us build the kind of ethical and fair internet we believe in. Last year we launched European Search Perspective (EUSP) , a joint venture with Qwant. The launch marked a big step forward in our journey towards tech independence and digital sovereignty for Europe. Now, we’ve taken the next step: our users in France are receiving a portion of their search results directly from EUSP’s o

European search engines Qwant and Ecosia said on Wednesday that they have both started serving search queries through an index they developed together, Staan, which aims to be a cheaper, more privacy-focused alternative to Google and Bing. Last year, French privacy-focused search engine Qwant struck a joint venture with German non-profit search engine Ecosia, to develop a European search index. Called European Search Perspective (EUSP), the JV now aims to serve around 50% of French queries and

Inverted Indexes: A Step-by-Step Implementation Guide

Before we start with the implementation, let's talk about why would you actually need an inverted index in a real life. Why would anyone need inverted index at all Imagine you need to create a system that would quickly look up a document, given several words from it - something like a wiki search. Simplest option I can think of would be to scan through each document, marking ones that have all the necessary words. That might work at first, but such solution wouldn't scale,

Making a StringBuffer in C, and questioning my sanity

I've been writing a lot of C. Whilst doing so I have been questioning my sanity. Am I an awful programmer? You know what, I think I might be. Kudos to all those devs that created monumental feats with C. Because it is not an easy tool to use. That said, I do enjoy writing C, just as long as I don't have a deadline or any business critical software to deliver. But when I say enjoy, I mean enjoyment in the sense of using a sycthe to cut a lawn, whilst my lawnmower watches on. It's lovely using th

How to Get Foreign Keys Horribly Wrong

Constraints keep the integrity of your system and prevent you from shooting yourself in the foot. Foreign keys are a special type of constraint because, unlike unique, check, and primary keys, they span more than one relation. This makes foreign keys harder to enforce and harder to get right. In this article, I demonstrate common pitfalls, potential optimizations, and implicit behavior related to foreign keys. Embedding user-defined indexes in Apache Parquet

Embedding User-Defined Indexes in Apache Parquet Files Posted on: Mon 14 July 2025 by Qi Zhu, Jigao Luo, and Andrew Lamb It’s a common misconception that Apache Parquet files are limited to basic Min/Max/Null Count statistics and Bloom filters, and that adding more advanced indexes requires changing the specification or creating a new file format. In fact, footer metadata and offset-based addressing already provide everything needed to embed user-defined index structures within Parquet files w

How often is the query plan optimal?

The basic promise of a query optimizer is that it picks the “optimal” query plan. But there’s a catch - the plan selection relies on cost estimates, calculated from selectivity estimates and cost of basic resources (I/O, CPU, …). So the question is, how often do we actually pick the “fastest” plan? And the truth is we actually make mistakes quite often. Consider the following chart, with durations of a simple SELECT query with a range condition. The condition is varied to match different fracti

EVs dominate the most American-made cars index and it’s not just because of Tesla

Tesla vehicles took the four top spots of the 2025 American-Made Index (AMI), an annual list calculated by Cars.com that ranks qualifying vehicles built and bought in the United States. Tesla’s dominance in the AMI isn’t new.
