Everybody loves Pokémon, whether that’s playing with (and as) them, watching them, and collecting ’em all. Nintendo’s never not ready to trot them out, and for those in the U.S., you’ll be able to visit them at a museum next year. On May 22, 2026, Nintendo will bring its Pokémon Fossil Museum to the Chicago’s Field Museum. Through embalming and sealed caskets advertised for “eternal rest,” the American funeral industry caters to our anxiety over bodily decay. In 1903, a Russian-born inventor in Herkimer, New York, named Joseph Karwowski proposed a radical way of preserving corpses: suspending them in glass cubes. Patented as a “Method of Preserving the Dead,” Karwowski provided diagrams and directions “whereby a corpse may be hermetically incased within a block of transparent glass” and thus “maintained for an ind

Following the recent discovery of Roman ruins in the City of London, more details have been revealed about the plans for a new museum of Roman London’s history. The remains, which are thought to be part of what we might call London’s first “city hall”, were uncovered during excavations by Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA) before a skyscraper was built on the site. Since their discovery, the property developer has been reworking their plans to include a new museum in the basement, and the det

The Trump administration, working in coordination with Elon Musk’s so-called Department of Government Efficiency, has gutted a small federal agency that provides funding to libraries and museums nationwide. In communities across the US, the cuts threaten student field trips, classes for seniors, and access to popular digital services, such as the ebook app Libby. On Monday, managers at the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) informed 77 employees—virtually the agency’s entire staff—

The video game The Last of Us Part II is filled with unforgettable moments. Life or death decisions, big revelations, all of it. In our minds though, the best moment in the game, and we wrote about this when it came out, takes place in an empty, decrepit museum. It’s a place where Joel (Pedro Pascal on the show) brings Ellie (Bella Ramsey on the show) for a very special present. A place we see briefly come to life in the latest trailer for The Last of Us season two, which starts April 13. Fans

The first time I went to Japan, I was in the air longer than I was on the ground. It was for a press event and while I walked around a bit, between sleep and work I didn’t really get to see anything. So when Lucasfilm announced that Star Wars Celebration was going to be in Japan in April 2025, I took it as a sign. I’m turning 45 in April and a trip to Japan for a Star Wars convention sounded like a fun way to celebrate. But I wasn’t gonna make the same mistake again—no quick trip in and out. Th

When a group of amateur treasure seekers set out on an expedition in Poland at the end of January, they weren’t sure what they’d find. On previous trips, while sweeping the ground with metal detectors, they found fascinating trinkets, including thirteenth-century Carolingian dynasty coins. This time around, they found something more mighty: a big honking sword from the Middle Ages. The giant blade, which was clearly meant to be handled with two hands, was found alongside two axes in the country
