I recently wrote a story about the wild ride of the Starliner spacecraft to the International Space Station last summer. It was based largely on an interview with the commander of the mission, NASA astronaut Butch Wilmore. His account of Starliner’s thruster failures—and his desperate efforts to keep the vehicle flying on course—was riveting. In the aftermath of the story, many readers, people on social media, and real-life friends congratulated me on conducting a great interview. But truth be

The Starliner spacecraft lost four thrusters while approaching the International Space Station last summer. NASA astronaut, Butch Wilmore took manual control, remembers Ars Technica , "But as Starliner's thrusters failed, Wilmore lost the ability to move the spacecraft in the direction he wanted to go..."After a half-hour exclusive interview, Ars Technica's senior space editor Eric Berger says he'd heard "a hell of a story.""Wilmore added that he felt pretty confident, in the aftermath of dockin

It's been ten months since NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams traveled to the International Space Station on board Boeing's issues-riddled Starliner spacecraft. After years of delays, Starliner finally launched from Space Launch Complex-41 at NASA's Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida on June 5, 2024, following three separate scrubs and the discovery of several helium leaks. Things didn't improve once the capsule reached space. Docking procedures with the ISS proved harr

As it flew up toward the International Space Station last summer, the Starliner spacecraft lost four thrusters. A NASA astronaut, Butch Wilmore, had to take manual control of the vehicle. But as its thrusters failed, Wilmore lost the ability to move Starliner in the direction he wanted to go. He and his fellow astronaut, Suni Williams, knew where they wanted to go. Starliner had flown to within a stone's throw of the space station, a safe harbor if only they could reach it. But already, the fai

NASA and Boeing are still working to get the aerospace giant's plagued Starliner spacecraft back off the ground. It's been just over half a year since Boeing's issues-riddled shuttle came back from its journey to the International Space Station. Due to technical problems, NASA decided Starliner wasn't safe enough for NASA astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore to be on board, leaving them stranded in orbit. In a Thursday update, NASA revealed that NASA and Boeing are "making progress towar

More than half a year after an empty Starliner spacecraft safely landed in a New Mexico desert, NASA and Boeing still have not decided whether the vehicle's next flight will carry any astronauts. In an update this week, the US space agency said it is still working through the process to certify Starliner for human missions. Whether it carries cargo or humans, Starliner's next flight will not occur until late this year or, more likely, sometime in 2026. Two things stand out in the new informati

NASA and Boeing are preparing the Starliner for its next flight after technical issues left the spacecraft unable to ferry its astronauts back to Earth for months. On Thursday, NASA announced that it’s working with Boeing to “resolve Starliner’s in-flight anomalies” before a crewed flight that could take place later this year or in early 2026. The

Despite a disastrous test launch that stranded two astronauts on board the International Space Station and caused it immense public embarrassment, Boeing hasn't given up on its Starliner spacecraft just yet. As SpaceNews reports, NASA commercial crew program manager Steve Stich revealed last week that the agency is expecting another test flight with the craft. Whether a crew will be on board this time around remains unclear. "What we’d like to do is that one flight and then get into a crew rot

The Starliner saga may not be over just yet. Despite a failed test flight that left a crew stranded in space, NASA still hasn’t given up on Boeing’s ill-fated spacecraft. Starliner may get another chance to transport astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS). During a briefing on Wednesday, NASA officials revealed that they are looking into launching another test flight of Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft before certifying the vehicle for regular crew rotation missions. “What we’d like t

Donald Trump insists, incorrectly, that he was the one to rescue those stranded astronauts — and he's getting roundly called out for trying to take credit for something he had almost nothing to do with. As the Washington Post reports, the plans for the safe return of Barry "Butch" Wilmore and Sunita Williams, the astronaut pair who flew up on Boeing's leaky Starliner craft last June only to be stuck there for nearly nine months longer than expected, were in the works long before Trump even won

Eight days. That’s how long Boeing Starliner’s mission — its first flight test with crew aboard — was supposed to last. But this mission has been singular in almost every way, and astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams have instead spent the past nine and a half months aboard the International Space Station. Now, finally, they're headed home. Their SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule is slated to begin undocking from the ISS at 1:05 am ET Tuesday and is scheduled for splashdown at 5:57 pm ET, accord

President Donald Trump and his bestest billionaire buddy Elon Musk continue to spread blatant lies about the situation surrounding the two Boeing Starliner astronauts currently aboard the ISS. In an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity, the pair once again—falsely—said the two astronauts are stranded and in need of rescue, and baselessly pinned the blame on former president Joe Biden. In a transcript of the interview posted to the White House website, Trump made several false claims about
