Voyager and Deep Space Nine draw many intriguing parallels as sister series that aired in tandem for a good chunk of their airings. Voyager‘s more episodic format and tone struck an altogether different approach to DS9‘s increasing lens on the dark heart of Star Trek‘s ideas and universe, digging into wider and deeper interconnected storylines. But one little piece of Deep Space Nine energy that Voyager kept early on came from an unlikely figure: Ensign Seska. The turncoat Bajoran ex-Maquis rev

In 1977, two probes launched less than a month apart on a mission to the great beyond. The twin Voyager spacecraft were to travel where no other mission had gone before, exploring what lies outside the vast bubble that surrounds our solar system, beyond the influence of our host star. Voyager 1 reached the beginning of interstellar space in 2012, while Voyager 2 reached the boundary in 2018, traveling beyond the protective bubble surrounding the solar system known as the heliosphere. Star Trek has always found great strength in the episodic format. Sure, the classic shows all dabbled in serialized elements, and some of them excelled in those elements the further they played with them, like Deep Space Nine did in its back half. There’s a reason that, when Trek was revitalized for the streaming age in a predominantly serialized form, fans bristled (and then turned to point at modern examples that leaned into bucking that trend, like Strange New Worlds, as a “return to form”).

There's more bad news for NASA's Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft. The twin space probes left the solar system in 2012 and 2018 respectively, and are currently over 15 billion and 13 billion miles from Earth. And their energy sources, on-board radioisotope power systems, are decaying quickly, forcing the space agency's Jet Propulsion Lab to shut down even more of the spacecraft's scientific instruments. According to a new statement, Voyager 1's cosmic ray subsystem experiment was shut down last mon

In brief: Mission control specialists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory are taking additional energy-conserving measures to ensure their Voyager probes can continue operating in interstellar space for as long as possible. Engineers shut down the cosmic ray subsystem instrument on Voyager 1 on February 25. This tool, which consists of three telescopes that study cosmic rays, helped NASA determine when Voyager 1 left the heliosphere. The space agency plans to turn off the low-energy charged pa

The Voyager spacecraft have been cruising through interstellar space for more than 47 years, collecting precious data on the vast cosmos. All that traveling has taken a toll on the farthest human-made objects, and the spacecraft’s days are numbered. NASA engineers are resorting to shutting off science instruments on both Voyager probes to keep the two iconic missions alive. Mission engineers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory turned off Voyager 1’s cosmic ray subsystem experiment on February 2

Nearly 50 years after they were first launched, Voyager 1 and 2 are still traveling around interstellar space — though they've faced some setbacks over the years. Now, NASA has announced that the twin Voyager spacecraft are losing some of their features in a bid to extend their lifespans in the face of a diminishing power supply. On February 25, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) turned off Voyager 1's cosmic ray subsystem experiment and on March 25, it will shut down Voyager 2's low-energy

It’s been 47 years since the twin Voyager spacecraft started their historic mission. Having travelled through interstellar space, farther from Earth than any other human-made objects, their nuclear batteries are depleting — but NASA is taking measures to squeeze as much life out of the aging probes as possible. The Voyagers’ radioisotope power system loses around 4 watts each year, so to preserve power, NASA engineers have been shutting down some of the science instruments carried by each probe

As Star Trek: Voyager turned 30 at the start of this year, I’ve had a lot of fun revisiting the first season of the show and re-examining what really works about that debut season three decades later. I’ve hit my first snag, perhaps of many to come in Voyager‘s decidedly mixed run of episodes: the first one that just kind of doesn’t really mesh together for me now, all these years later. That episode is “Ex Post Facto,” a weird but loosely familiar format for Voyager to dive into just eight epi

Star Trek: Voyager‘s premise was both its greatest boon and its biggest curse. Flinging the titular Starfleet vessel tens of thousands of lightyears away from Federation space into unchartered territory wasn’t just a fantastic evolution of the franchise’s original intent to boldly go where no man had gone before, but a vector for fascinating story ideas about resource management, ethics, first contact, and a million other Star Trek ideas that could be re-imagined in a context where the world est
