All signs indicate that Apple’s base iPhone 18 will be missing from this fall’s flagship lineup, launching in early 2027 instead. But when it does arrive, it will reportedly come with at least one new Pro-tier upgrade: 12GB of RAM.
12GB of RAM coming to iPhone 18 with A20 chip, says analyst
Recent reports on the base model iPhone 18 have focused on the negatives. We’ve gotten more corroboration that iPhone 18 won’t launch this fall, as it normally would. Instead, Apple is pushing it to early 2027 alongside iPhone 18e.
Additionally, Weibo leaker Fixed Focus Digital says Apple plans to downgrade the iPhone 18 manufacturing process to cut costs. This might result in some minor spec regressions compared to iPhone 17.
But today brings better news for Apple’s base model.
Analyst Dan Nystedt, who has previously reported on Apple’s A20 chip and its new 2nm process, added one new detail about the A20 today: it will have 12GB of RAM.

Last fall we heard that 12GB of RAM might be a possibility for iPhone 18, but it still seemed fairly uncertain.
With Nystedt’s corroboration though, it now seems that 12GB is a safer bet. This will represent a 50% increase over the 8GB of RAM found in the base iPhone 17.
Apple brought a similar upgrade to its Pro models last year, moving from 8GB in iPhone 16 Pro to 12GB in iPhone 17 Pro. And with the growing importance of AI tasks, it’s not too surprising to hear that the base model will soon follow suit.
