GoKawiilHomey adds unified firmware updates for Matter, Z-Wave and Zigbee devices
Athom's Homey hub now lets users update Matter, Z-Wave, and Zigbee smart home devices directly from its app, without opening separate manufacturer apps. For Matter devices specifically, Homey pulls firmware information straight from the Connectivity Standards Alliance's Distributed Compliance Ledger, bypassing the need for manufacturers to build update support into their own apps. Z-Wave and Zigbee updates depend on developer support, with an initial vendor list including IKEA, Aeotec, INNR, and others.
GoKawiil's interpretation of the reporting above, not reported fact.
Fragmented, manufacturer-dependent firmware updates have long left smart home devices insecure and unreliable, and this approach shows how Matter's shared standards can solve that problem at the hub level rather than per-brand. If Apple Home and other platforms adopted a similar centralized update model pulling from the same ledger, it could meaningfully improve security and consistency across the smart home ecosystem.
- Homey now handles firmware updates for Matter, Z-Wave, and Zigbee devices from one app.
- Matter updates pull directly from the Connectivity Standards Alliance's compliance ledger, skipping manufacturer apps entirely.
- The feature highlights a capability Apple Home and other Matter platforms have yet to replicate.
