404 Media is asking residents nationwide to submit public records showing how local police departments use Axon's automatic license plate reader cameras, which many cities are adopting after backlash over Flock's role in ICE lookups and a Texas officer's search related to a self-managed abortion. The outlet has already gathered Axon 'activity reports' from six police agencies detailing which officers searched plate data, their badge numbers, and stated justifications, but wants more submissions to map usage nationwide.
A public records analysis by the Electronic Frontier Foundation found that police officers across the US frequently entered nonsensical or joking justifications—such as 'LMAO,' 'lol,' 'idk,' and random keystrokes—when required to explain searches of Flock's license plate reader database. The pattern spans roughly 2023 through 2026, showing that lack of accountability in these warrantless lookups is widespread rather than isolated.
Security researcher Bill Swearingen showcased a reinforcement-learning system at DEF CON that generates geometric patterns capable of fooling object-detection AI, including systems built on the popular YOLO framework. He tested the patterns against 11 face- and person-detection models, successfully lowering confidence scores or evading detection entirely, while companies like Cap_able and Urban Privacy already sell clothing woven with similar disruptive designs.
Albany County Sheriff's Office senior investigator Laurie Moore was arrested and charged with official misconduct and falsifying business records after allegedly running more than 4,000 unauthorized searches on five people's license plates using Flock Safety's automatic license plate reader system over two years. The Austin suburb's city council voted unanimously on August 25 to terminate its agreement with Flock Safety, cutting off access to its automated license plate reader system. City staff had already begun covering the 28 cameras installed around town earlier that day, ending a relationship with the vendor that dated back to 2020.
