UN-backed report says overshooting 1.5C could permanently damage ice sheets and glaciers
A new UN-backed scientific report warns that even a temporary breach of the 1.5C Paris warming threshold could cause irreversible loss of glaciers, snow and polar ice sheets. It finds Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets are already melting roughly six times faster than in the 1990s, and that returning warming to 1.5C after an overshoot would not stop continued ice loss. The report's authors argue long-term global temperatures need to fall closer to 1C, or lower, to protect the cryosphere.
