Megi Endeladze, co-owner of Penny's Coffee Shop in Buffalo, New York, used ChatGPT to design a printed menu poster after the barista who usually hand-drew chalkboard signs moved away. She spent about $350 on printing and framing, then posted the result to Instagram, where customers quickly criticized the shop for relying on AI-generated artwork instead of human design.
Instagram users report that the platform's 'AI Content' label is being applied incorrectly to photos edited with minor tools like Canva's background remover or blemish fixers, while genuine AI-generated images often go unflagged. This mirrors a similar labeling breakdown from 2024, when Meta's 'Made by AI' tag misfired on images with only minor generative retouching detected through embedded metadata.
Google introduced Google Pics, an AI-powered image creation and editing tool built on its Nano Banana model, rolling out to Workspace business customers and Google AI Pro/Ultra subscribers. Rather than offering design templates or a creator marketplace like Canva, the tool lets users generate and edit visuals like posters and social posts through text prompts, with features for object isolation, text editing, and collaborative multi-version generation. It launches first inside Docs and Slides, with Drive integration to follow.
Google announced that Pics, its AI-powered image generation and design tool first revealed in May, is now widely available rather than limited to select testers. Access requires a Google AI Pro or Ultra plan, an AI Pro for Education subscription, or select Workspace Business and Enterprise tiers.
Canva has launched Affinity, a unified creative suite that combines the former Affinity Photo, Designer, and Publisher into a single application with Pixel, Vector, and Layout studios. The core app is free with no restrictions, though generative AI tools like Generative Fill and Generate Image require a Canva Pro subscription. It supports importing Adobe file formats and can open older Affinity V1/V2 files, though the reverse isn't true.
