According to The Information, China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has asked Alibaba and ByteDance to detail plans for purchasing Nvidia's RTX Pro 5500 chips, which are officially gaming GPUs. Sources say Beijing expects these chips could be repurposed into servers to help run China's leading AI models, potentially loosening restrictions on Nvidia hardware.
A report from nonprofit watchdog C4ADS outlines three main routes Chinese buyers use to obtain export-restricted Nvidia AI chips like the H100, A100 and Blackwell models: direct purchases through research institutions, rerouting shipments through third countries in Southeast Asia, and layered shell-company transactions. The group notes its findings only cover documented cases, so the real volume of smuggled hardware is likely much larger.
Taiwanese prosecutors have charged nine individuals connected to a scheme accused of illegally routing AI servers containing Nvidia chips to China, circumventing U.S. export restrictions. The case highlights ongoing efforts by Chinese buyers to obtain restricted American semiconductor technology through indirect channels.
