Tesla has begun volume production of its Semi electric truck at a new factory next to Gigafactory Nevada, with first units already delivered to customers. The Sparks, Nevada plant can eventually build 50,000 trucks a year, and Tesla named PepsiCo, US Foods, DHL and other companies among buyers. The Semi comes in Standard Range (325 miles) and Long Range (500 miles) versions, using 4680 battery cells and an 822 kWh pack.
Tesla held a ribbon-cutting for its first high-volume Semi manufacturing facility in Sparks, Nevada, nearly a decade after unveiling the heavy-duty electric truck. The company has already secured commitments including a 2,500-truck order from industry coalition ZET SCALE and a 500-truck order from trucking firm Einride, with deliveries beginning this month.
Tesla has secured what is being described as the largest U.S. order for electric heavy-duty trucks to date, with shippers ordering 2,500 Tesla Semis. The purchase would roughly double the current number of Class 8 electric trucks operating on American roads.
