NASA is preparing to launch the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope on Sunday at 7:26 a.m. ET from Kennedy Space Center, using a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket. The telescope, arriving roughly eight months early and under budget, will travel to the Sun-Earth L2 Lagrange point about 1 million miles away after final inspections and fueling with 290 gallons of hydrazine.
NASA's Starling mission tested FALCON, a navigation system built with startup EraDrive that lets a spacecraft determine its own orbital position by observing nearby satellites and debris rather than relying on GPS signals. The system pairs EraDrive's Era-Core software with Starling's existing star tracker cameras and a catalog of known orbiting objects to calculate location autonomously.
SpaceX has flown its last Starlink mission on a Falcon 9 from Cape Canaveral for the foreseeable future, according to company launch VP Kiko Dontchev. Going forward, Starlink launches from Florida will be handled by the still-developing Starship rocket, dropping the site's monthly launch count from roughly eight or nine to about two. SpaceX will instead lean more heavily on its Vandenberg pad in California to keep deploying Starlink satellites.
SpaceX plans a second Starbase-style launch complex on former Exxon land in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana, after a seven-year site search. The company says construction begins in 2027 with a first Starship launch targeted for 2029, though Louisiana's economic development agency projects operations starting in 2030.
NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is scheduled to launch atop a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Kennedy Space Center no earlier than 7:26AM Eastern on August 30, with live coverage starting at 6:20AM. If weather or technical issues delay the flight, a backup attempt is planned for August 31 at 7:22AM Eastern. NASA will also host a science briefing and prelaunch news conference on August 29.
