Apple has introduced its first foldable smartphone, called the Duo, with prices starting at $2,000 and reaching $3,200 for the largest storage model. New CEO John Ternus, who led the project during his time in Apple's hardware division, presented the book-style device as being inspired by the iPad, unfolding into a small tablet and folding into a wider phone.
Apple is holding a media event at its Cupertino headquarters where it is widely expected to introduce its first folding iPhone, reportedly called the iPhone Ultra and priced above $2,000. The company is also expected to reveal Pro iPhone models, new Apple Watch and Watch Ultra devices, and updated AirPods, with the base iPhone 18 likely delayed until next year.
Samsung executives Hee-Cheul Moon and Seungki Choi told WIRED they welcome Apple's entry into the foldable market ahead of its rumored iPhone Ultra launch. They noted that Samsung has cut 75 grams off its foldable design since 2017, with the new Galaxy Z Fold8 weighing 201 grams, lighter than Samsung's own single-screen Galaxy S26 Ultra. Apple's folding device is expected to weigh between 230 and 241 grams, heavier than Samsung's latest model.
Xiaomi showcased its first wide-screen foldable in the numbered flagship line, the 18 Fold, at IFA 2026, featuring a 5.38-inch cover display and 7.58-inch inner screen. The device stands out with rounded corners, a striking cherry-red finish option, and a passport-style body that houses a notably capable camera setup. The launch comes right after Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 8 and just before Apple's rumored first folding iPhone reveal.
