According to a blogger tracking Chinese social media chatter, Samsung is moving up the release of its Galaxy Z Trifold 2, seemingly in reaction to Apple's incoming iPhone Duo. The move comes despite the original trifold device's lackluster commercial performance, and the new model is expected to carry a similar price tag.
Leaker Lanzuk reports that Samsung is accelerating development of its next tri-fold phone, potentially moving the launch up to late 2026 or early 2027 from a previously expected late 2027 release. The move follows Apple's reveal of the iPhone Duo and strong early sales of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 lineup, with Samsung reportedly aiming to keep pricing close to the original TriFold's $2,900 tag despite rising component costs.
Huawei launched the Mate XT 2 in China, its third trifold phone, switching to an inward-folding design similar to Samsung's Galaxy Z TriFold rather than the accordion style of prior models. The device also introduces a privacy OLED screen, akin to the one on Samsung's Galaxy S26 Ultra, that narrows viewing angles to shield content from onlookers when enabled as a paid option.
Honor has begun selling its experimental Robot Phone in China, a device that hides a tiny three-axis gimbal mechanism behind the main 200-megapixel camera on its back. The company says it engineered a custom 2.6-gram motor to make the mechanism small enough to fit inside a handset, though the result is a 9.6mm-thick phone. Huawei has started taking pre-orders in China for its second-generation tri-fold phone, the Mate XT 2, ahead of a formal launch on September 7. The device switches to an inward-folding mechanism that fully shields the inner display, unlike the zig-zag fold on the original Mate XT that left part of the screen exposed, and will come in 16GB/512GB and 16GB/1TB configurations, including a purple variant with a built-in privacy screen.
