Apple has released Xcode 27.1 beta 1, the first developer tool that supports building apps for the upcoming foldable iPhone Duo. The beta includes a simulator so developers can preview how their apps behave on the device's larger folding display before it ships.
Apple confirmed to CNET that its first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, will launch on Oct. 23 running iOS 27.1 instead of the base iOS 27 version. The company said this build adds features specifically designed for the foldable form factor, while other iPhones are already testing the next update, iOS 27.2. Preorders for the Duo open Oct. 16, and all devices will eventually be able to move to iOS 27.2 later this year.
Days after pushing watchOS 27, tvOS 27, and related updates to the public, Apple has begun testing the next round: developer beta 1 for watchOS 27.2, tvOS 27.2, visionOS 27.2, and other platforms. This move bypasses the widely anticipated 27.1 releases, which Apple had said would arrive in October alongside the iPhone Duo launch.
Apple will roll out iOS 27 to all users on September 15, with the first iOS 27.1 beta expected within about a week based on past release patterns. The company has confirmed iOS 27.1 will ship no later than October 23, timed to coincide with the launch of the new iPhone Duo, likely landing between October 19 and 21.
Apple published a developer tech talk explaining how third-party apps will render on the upcoming iPhone Duo foldable display. The system includes three compatibility tiers: a default mode for apps built before iOS 27, an improved layout for apps updated for iOS 27.0, and full-screen support for apps targeting iOS 27.1, which arrives around the device's October launch.
