Despite widespread claims that artificial intelligence is destroying the value of computer science degrees, employers say demand for graduates remains strong. However, hiring managers now expect candidates to demonstrate practical skill working alongside AI tools rather than just traditional programming knowledge.
A new Pew Research Center poll spanning 37 countries finds that majorities in 34 of them believe artificial intelligence will reduce employment over the next two decades. The United States ranked as the third-most pessimistic nation at 71%, trailing only South Korea and Australia at 76% each, while poorer nations like Nigeria were more likely to see AI creating jobs.
With hiring conditions described as historically difficult, career experts are pointing to a less obvious trait that can set candidates apart: being genuinely interesting. The quality isn't about flashy self-promotion but stems from counterintuitive habits and traits that make someone memorable and valuable to employers.
Recruiters say white-collar job applicants, including lawyers and bankers, are adding a brief personal hobbies line to their resumes to seem more human amid a competitive hiring market. According to a Wall Street Journal report, more than half of legal candidates placed by one recruiting firm last year included such a line, up sharply from prior years. Recruiters suggest the section be limited to a single line placed at the end of the resume.
