A newly compiled research review synthesizes recent findings on metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and its more severe form, MASH, tracing the field from its 1980 origins as NASH to the 2023 multisociety nomenclature update. It highlights recent multiomic and genetic studies showing that MASLD is not one uniform disease but splits into at least two distinct subtypes—one driven mainly by liver-specific factors and another tied to broader cardiometabolic dysfunction. The review also draws on global epidemiological data covering adult, pediatric and adolescent populations to frame the disease's rising burden.
