Boom Supersonic delays Overture jet, builds gas turbines for AI data centers

United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby says Boom Supersonic will miss its 2029 target for delivering the first Overture supersonic jet. Meanwhile, Boom has opened a new Colorado factory to build 42-megawatt natural gas turbines called Superpower for AI data centers, aiming to deliver the first units by mid-2027 and scale to 50 turbines annually by 2029. The company says a shared turbine core, Sprint Core, will power both the Superpower unit and the Overture's Symphony engine, with first test firing planned before Thanksgiving.

United CEO doubts Boom Supersonic's 2029 Overture delivery date

Boom Supersonic is building a Colorado factory to make gas turbines for AI data centers even as its supersonic airliner program faces skepticism. United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby said in an October 28, 2026 podcast interview that Boom's stated 2029 target for delivering its first Overture jet 'is not going to happen,' predicting delays. United, American, and Japan Airlines have conditional, deposit-backed agreements to buy the Overture once it's commercially available.

Researchers combine satellite, mapping and conflict datasets to track Ukraine building destruction

A new methodology integrates multiple existing data sources—Sentinel-1 radar-based damage detection, Overture Maps building footprints, VIINA territorial control data, and UCDP fatality records—to analyze building destruction across Ukraine from March 2022 to October 2023. The approach disaggregates damage data from 10-meter pixel grids down to individual building level using over 26 million mapped footprints, mostly sourced from Microsoft's ML Building Footprints and OpenStreetMap.
