Meta signs carbon-credit deal with recycler MacroCycle to fund first plant

MacroCycle, a Cambridge-based startup that developed a chemical process to purify recycled PET plastic from waste streams like textiles, has struck a deal with Meta. Meta will pay for the environmental attribute credits tied to MacroCycle's reduced carbon emissions, funding construction of MacroCycle's first commercial recycling facility in the U.S.

SIU Researchers 3D-Print Cookies Using Plastic-Eating Engineered Yeast

Scientists at Southern Illinois University Carbondale used CRISPR-edited yeast strains to break down PET plastic and plant waste into edible proteins, fats, and flavor compounds, which were then 3D printed into small cookie-shaped snacks called 'ÂBites.' The plastic is first broken down using heat, water, and oxygen before the yeast converts it into a food-like slurry, though the team has not yet tasted the cookies pending university approval.

SIU Carbondale scientists 3D-print vanilla cookies from recycled PET plastic and crop waste

A team led by associate professor Lahiru Jayakody at Southern Illinois University Carbondale has engineered yeast strains that break down PET plastic bottles combined with agricultural waste like corn stalks into a protein-rich, vanilla-flavored snack called µBites. The project grew out of NASA's Deep Space Food Challenge, and though it did not win the competition, NASA encouraged the team to keep refining the concept, leading to improved taste, aroma and color unveiled recently at the American Chemical Society Expo in Chicago.
