Scientists detect weaker chemical bonds in superheavy element seaborgium
Researchers at GSI Darmstadt synthesized the superheavy isotope 259Sg and formed a volatile hexacarbonyl compound, Sg(CO)6, comparing its behavior to tungsten carbonyl compounds made from short-lived isotopes. By tracking how these complexes moved through a temperature-gradient chromatography column, the team measured bonding properties of seaborgium directly for only the second time ever.
