Reddit to push users toward logged-in access as search referrals fall

Reddit announced during its Q3 earnings call that it will shift toward a primarily logged-in experience, citing a drop of more than 1 million weekly search referrals in October. The company's global daily active users held flat at 130.3 million, but U.S. daily actives fell to 50.7 million from 53.2 million in Q2, a 2% year-over-year decline. Reddit warned daily active users could drop by a low double-digit percentage next quarter if the trend continues, even as revenue rose 53% year-over-year to $895 million.

Reddit CEO says Google AI Mode isn't driving site traffic

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman said on the company's Q3 2026 earnings call that Google's AI Mode and AI Overviews no longer send meaningful traffic to Reddit or other websites. Reddit disclosed that weekly search referrals fell by more than 1 million on average in October, which Huffman linked partly to AI-driven search changes and to machine-translated content being ranked lower outside the US.

Google's AI Overviews reshape web traffic for publishers, industry data shows

Google's 2024 rollout of AI Overviews, which places AI-generated summaries above traditional search links, has altered how readers interact with search results. Investigations by the Press Gazette found the feature appearing in roughly a quarter of news-related searches by May 2024, with effects on publisher traffic becoming evident by August. The News/Media Alliance had warned the change could severely hurt web traffic for news outlets.

Brown Brothers Media buys news sites, replaces staff with AI content, claims 50M monthly views

Brown Brothers Media, run by Justin, Lachlan and Brendan Brown, has been acquiring established online publications covering topics like space travel, parenting and business, then laying off much of their writing staff and replacing them with mass-produced AI-generated articles. The company says its network now draws over 50 million page views monthly, a figure roughly corroborated by third-party analytics firm Similarweb, which estimates about 64.7 million average monthly visitors — putting BBM's reach ahead of outlets like CBS News and Forbes.
