Slate Auto has introduced a compact two-door electric truck that strips away typical modern features, offering manual crank windows as standard and a small 65-kWh battery yielding roughly 205 miles of range. The base model costs under $25,000, far less than the average $50,000 new vehicle price in the US, though buyers can pay extra for upgrades like power windows, vinyl wraps, and a Bluetooth stereo.
Zoox, the driverless-vehicle company Amazon acquired for $1.2 billion in 2020, has begun charging passengers for rides in San Francisco and Las Vegas. Its boxy, steering-wheel-free vehicles seat up to four people and are limited to roads with speed limits of 45 mph or below under NHTSA's approval, which permits up to 5,000 vehicles over two years.
China's State Administration for Market Regulation has recalled nearly three million Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles, saying interior emergency door handles blend into cabin trim and are hard to find in a crash. Tesla must add warning labels and push an over-the-air update that lowers windows automatically after collisions. A separate recall was issued for almost 400,000 Xiaomi SU7 EVs over the same concern.
Tesla has stopped accepting new orders for its Solar Roof shingles, telling certified installers the product is no longer available for new projects. The company will keep selling conventional solar panels and home battery systems, and its old Solar Roof web page now redirects to its solar-panel offering. Sources told Electrek the product was scrapped because it was not financially viable.
