Scientists placed mussels near sunken World War I and World War II vessels in the North Sea to test for contamination, and found that explosive residues from the wrecks are seeping into surrounding waters. The mussels absorbed toxic and carcinogenic compounds linked to degrading TNT stored in the ships and submarines.
