6 features from other skins I want on One UI

C. Scott Brown / Android Authority One UI has been with us for six years now, and it’s easily the best Android skin Samsung has made. One UI is smoother, more reliable, and easier to use than Samsung Experience or TouchWiz, the skins that preceded it. Aside from a blip with One UI 7, it’s been updated quicker than ever, often beating other Android skins. The features One UI delivers have made it my favorite flavor of Android since I first used it on my Galaxy S10 Plus, but there are still thin

Rumor: iPhone 17 Pro could have three unexpected camera upgrades

We’re probably about six weeks away from Apple announcing the iPhone 17 Pro. Much of what we expect to see has been leaked for months, but a new rumor has surfaced about some unexpected camera upgrades. According to Joe Rossignol at MacRumors, the site received an anonymous tip sharing unverified information based on an ad being produced for the upcoming flagship iPhone: The tipster claimed to be familiar with an iPhone 17 Pro commercial that is allegedly being produced by Slovenian company Di

4k NASA employees opt to leave agency through deferred resignation program

Nearly 4,000 NASA employees have opted to leave the space agency through the Trump administration's deferred resignation program, NASA said on Saturday. The cuts amount to an estimated 20% of NASA's workforce, and will reduce the agency from 18,000 to 14,000 employees, NASA spokesperson Cheryl Warner said in a statement shared with NPR. The total number includes the agency's loss of 500 other workers due to normal attrition, she said. During a second round of the program, which closed at midni

Best Expert-Tested Workout Apps and Services for 2025

There are fitness apps for every budget. Some are completely free or offer a free trial, and some require a monthly subscription. Your choice will ultimately depend on whether you think investing in a paid app will actually help you get closer to your goals and what you're comfortable spending. Other things to consider are if you prefer live streaming or On Demand workouts. Think about what goals you're trying to achieve when using the app. Do you just want to get moving more often, or are ther

Janet: Lightweight, Expressive, Modern Lisp

Janet is a functional and imperative programming language. It runs on Windows, Linux, macOS, BSDs, and should run on other systems with some porting. The entire language (core library, interpreter, compiler, assembler, PEG) is less than 1MB. You can also add Janet scripting to an application by embedding a single C source file and a single header. Use Cases Janet makes a good system scripting language, or a language to embed in other programs. Janet also can be used for rapid prototyping, dyna

The AI Boom Is Creating Housing Costs in the Bay Area That You'll Think You Must Be Hallucinating

Akin to a rapacious maw, the AI boom has swallowed up untold amounts of water, energy, and jobs lost to automation. Now add the rapidly dwindling housing stock in the Bay Area as even more tech workers crowd in, lured by the possibility of enriching themselves in this massive AI gold rush, according to reporting from The San Francisco Standard. Housing costs are already notoriously high in the San Fran area, but the AI boom has ratcheted up numbers to eye-watering figures while startup workers

Post SMTP plugin flaw exposes 200K WordPress sites to hijacking attacks

More than 200,000 WordPress websites are using a vulnerable version of the Post SMTP plugin that allows hackers to take control of the administrator account. It’s marketed as a replacement of the default ‘wp_mail()’ function that is more reliable and feature-rich. On May 23, a security researcher reported the vulnerability to WordPress security firm PatchStack. The flaw is now identif

I ran with the Apple Watch and Samsung Watch 8 - here's the better AI coach

Samsung's Running Coach on the left, and Apple's Workout Buddy on the right. Nina Raemont/ZDNET Apple just released its latest Apple Watch software, the public beta for WatchOS 26, and one feature I was eager to try is finally available. Workout Buddy is an AI-powered feature that offers spoken encouragement, stats, and a host of metrics on the Apple Watch, and works in conjunction with Apple-owned earbuds like AirPods or Beats. It delivers sporadic bits of data, tries to motivate you, and ann

Algorithm for simulating phosphor persistence of analog oscilloscopes

Background to phosphor displays and analog oscilloscopes For all of you that have used analog oscilloscopes or other equipment with a phosphor display knows how beautiful the image can be from such displays. The color grading, which naturally occurs due to the persistence in the glow from the phosphor, also acts as a useful measurement on the signal integrity, such as how much noise there is and the shape/modulation of the underlying signal. Photograph of the display on a COS6100A analog oscil

The Sail instruction-set semantics specification language

Implicit parameters are always integers, and they must appear first before any other parameters in the function type signature. The first argument can then just be omitted when calling the function, like so: Functions may also have implicit parameters, e.g. we can implement a zero extension function that implicitly picks up its result length from the calling context as follows: Sail will also ensure that the output of our function has precisely the length bits('n * 'm) for all possible inputs

The ‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ Trailer Welcomes You Back to School

Star Trek faces an uncertain future at the moment, as shows that helped define its streaming renaissance end one by one, and little is known about what lies on the horizon (especially thanks to current events in our own world). So it’s perhaps fitting, then, that the one new show we do know is coming is all about welcoming a new generation back to Star Trek‘s fundamental ideals after a similar period of uncertainty: Starfleet Academy. To close out today’s packed Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-

Extreme sports, an FPS from former Blizzard devs and other new indie games worth checking out

Welcome to our weekly roundup of what's going on in the indie game space. There have been quite a few high-profile arrivals this week, as well as others that have left early access and or arrived on more platforms. I have a long flight this weekend and I'm a little torn over what to play while I'm in the air. I have my Switch 2, Steam Deck and Playdate with me (excessive, I know). As such, there are many ways I can go here. I haven't yet burrowed my way into Donkey Kong Bananza, so that's a str

Ageing accelerates around age 50 ― some organs faster than others

Ageing of many tissues accelerates around age 50, according to an analysis of tissues in people ranging from teenagers to individuals in their sixties.Credit: Karen Haibara/AFP/Getty It is a warning that middle-aged people have long offered the young: ageing is not a smooth process. Now, an exhaustive analysis of how proteins change over time in different organs backs up that idea, finding that people experience an inflection point at around 50 years old, after which ageing seems to accelerate.

Floods and Other Disasters Kill More People at Night, but Not for the Reasons You Think

It was 4 a.m. on July 4 at Camp La Junta in Kerr County when Kolton Taylor woke up to the sound of screaming. The 12-year-old boy stepped out of bed and straight into knee-deep floodwaters from the nearby Guadalupe River. Before long, the water had already risen to his waist. In the darkness, he managed to feel for his tennis shoes floating nearby, put them on, and escape to the safety of the hillside. All 400 people at the all-boys camp survived, even as they watched one of their cabins float a

Now make that number almost 7,000 people, and what happens is pure captivation as the crowd in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con were wowed by the first episode of Alien: Earth, which comes to FX on August 12. The episode starts in a very familiar way for Alien fans before doing a complete 180 into something totally different. Almost instantly, it’s clear that creator Noah Hawley b

Best Home Security Cameras for Apple HomeKit and Siri in 2025

Today’s home security cameras come packed with features, not to mention testing out compatibility with the Apple Home app. We test in several different ways in our homes and CNET offices to really check out everything these cameras can down. Set up and camera quality As we set up cameras, we pay close attention to their design and how fragile or durable it is, as well as what features they have -- for example, how easy it is to change batteries or insert a microSD card. The Texas Floods Were a Preview of What’s to Come

This story originally appeared on Grist and is part of the Climate Desk collaboration. The country watched in horror as torrential rain drenched Texas earlier this month, sweeping at least 135 people to their death. Kerr County alone lost 107, including more than two dozen children at Camp Mystic. From afar, it would be easy, even tempting, to think that floods like these could never happen to you. That the disaster is remote. It’s not. As details of the tragedy have come into focus, the lis

OnePlus Nord 5 review: selfie-centric midranger

The OnePlus Nord 5 does exactly what the company’s Nord phones have always done: deliver strong specs at a relatively low price. It’s one of the more powerful phones at this price point and should easily outstrip Samsung and Google’s more expensive alternatives. This is a function-over-form phone, one where the key selling points are a powerful processor and long battery life, which are the boring mainstays that tend to matter the most in midrange models like this. The problem for the Nord 5 is

Own a OnePlus phone? I changed 10 settings to significantly improve the user experience

Prakhar Khanna/ZDNET It's been agreed upon by the ZDNET team that the OnePlus 13 is this year's sleeper hit. At a starting price of $899, the flagship phone can compete against more expensive phones like the Pixel 9 Pro XL and Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra. And we have OnePlus' clean yet highly customizable software experience to thank for that. Also: The next big wireless charging leap is coming soon: What Qi2 25W means for Android phones If you switched to a OnePlus phone recently or have been u

UK's New Age Verification Requirement Thwarted in the Simplest Way Imaginable

Earlier this week, the United Kingdom’s age assurance requirement for sites that publish pornographic material went into effect, which has resulted in everything from Pornhub to Reddit and Discord displaying an age verification panel when users attempt to visit. There’s just one little problem. As The Verge notes, all it takes to defeat the age-gating is a VPN, and those aren’t hard to come by these days. Here’s the deal: Ofcom, the UK’s telecom regulator, requires online platforms to verify th

Open Sauce is a confoundingly brilliant Bay Area event

This is the second year I brought my Dad (a now-retired radio engineer and co-host of Geerling Engineering) to Open Sauce, a Bay Area maker faire-like event, dreamed up by William Osman and featuring hundreds of exhibits ranging from mad science, to vintage electronics, to games, to world-record-breaking Rubik's Cube solvers: Sprawling over the grounds of the San Mateo County Event Center, I met people of all ages who were building all sorts of zany contraptions. Sometimes practical, sometimes

SAVE Student Loan Borrowers, You Have Only a Few Days Left Before Interest Restarts. Should You Move to IBR?

Interest will restart for SAVE borrowers whose loans remain in a general forbearance on Aug. 1. Viva Tung/CNET If you're a student loan borrower enrolled in SAVE, you have about a week left to switch repayment plans before interest will begin accruing on your loans. But although interest payments will kick in, the change doesn't mean you have to switch repayment plans yet. Earlier this month, the Department of Education announced that on Aug. 1 interest would resume for the nearly 8 million bo

Apple TV+: As ‘Shrinking’ wraps season 3, Harrison Ford gives an emotional speech

Last week, Shrinking landed seven Emmy nominations, including Harrison Ford’s first, for his role as the curmudgeonly Paul Rhodes. This week, the show wrapped filming for its third season, and Apple TV+’s Instagram account shared the video of a very emotional Harrison Ford thanking the crew, and hoping for another round. ‘The very, very best’ In the past, Ford has spoken about how, since Shrinking first aired, people have stopped hunting him down the street for pictures, and instead tend to as

Apple dodges new Dutch ruling on dating app fees (for now)

In June, a Dutch court upheld a prior antitrust ruling against Apple, in a case involving dating apps and the App Store commission. Today, the case was put on pause, as the country’s watchdog awaits the outcome of Apple’s DMA negotiations with the European Commission. A bit of context This case was originally brought by the Dutch Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM), accusing Apple of “unreasonable conditions in its App Store”, as it collected its 30% IAP fee, while not allowing for exter
