Google Maps, Find Hub on the Pixel 10 just gained satellite-based live location sharing powers

TL;DR With the launch of the Pixel 10 series, both Find Hub and Google Maps now support satellite-based live location sharing. Pixel 10 users can send their live location even without cellular coverage, using Skylo’s satellite network. Google Maps, Find Hub, and Messages will also support live location sharing on the Pixel 10 with T-Mobile’s T-Satellite. Soon, other devices on T-Satellite will also get this feature on the above apps. As part of the Find Hub rebrand announced at Google I/O, Go

AI website builder Lovable increasingly abused for malicious activity

Cybercriminals are increasingly abusing the AI-powered Lovable website creation and hosting platform to generate phishing pages, malware-dropping portals, and various fraudulent websites. The malicious sites created through the platform impersonate large and recognizable brands, and feature traffic filtering systems like CAPTCHA to keep bots out. While Lovable has taken steps to better protect its platform from abuse, as AI-powered site generators increase in number, the barrier to entering cy

Scientists Can’t Figure Out Why Just Walking In Nature Appears to Quickly Heal Your Brain Rot

Image by Getty / Futurism Mental Health "Go outside" or "touch grass" are common rejoinders deployed in online arguments these days. And, at least for those of us whose brains have probably melted from spending too much time on an app where said arguments take place, it turns out it's pretty sound advice. As the New York Times reports, there's a growing body of evidence suggesting that simply spending time in nature can instantly boost your algorithm-addled brain's attention span. It's part of

The Pixel 10 Pro has the display upgrade your poor eyes have been begging for

Rita El Khoury / Android Authority TL;DR The Pixel 10 Pro series introduces a new “sensitive eyes” setting that doubles its display PWM rate to 480Hz. The option is limited to the Pro models, with partial support on the Pro Fold, and none on the base Pixel 10. This is Google’s first significant step toward helping flicker-sensitive users, but it could go further. OLED screens are great for deep blacks and rich colors, but they also have a hidden flicker problem. It’s caused by PWM dimming, w

Pixel 10 Phones Get an Added T-Mobile Perk: Expanded T-Satellite App Access

When T-Mobile officially launched its T-Satellite service in June, the Starlink-based service went live with the ability to send texts via satellite from most recent phones. The company also promised that starting in October, developers would be able to let their apps use the satellite network. T-Mobile broke that promise Wednesday -- but in a good way. The new Google Pixel 10 phones, which were announced Wednesday and begin shipping on Aug. 28, will be the first devices to include apps that ti

China’s Guowang megaconstellation is more than another version of Starlink

US defense officials have long worried that China's Guowang satellite network might give the Chinese military access to the kind of ubiquitous connectivity US forces now enjoy with SpaceX's Starlink network. It turns out the Guowang constellation could offer a lot more than a homemade Chinese alternative to Starlink's high-speed consumer-grade broadband service. China has disclosed little information about the Guowang network, but there's mounting evidence that the satellites may provide Chines

Arkansas Hosts the Planet’s Only Public Diamond Mine

In southwest Arkansas, the state government runs what might be the world’s most unusual diamond mine. For the price of a movie ticket, anyone can dig for diamonds at Crater of Diamonds State Park—and keep whatever they find. The 37-acre search field near Murfreesboro sits atop an ancient volcanic pipe that erupted roughly 100 million years ago. That eruption brought diamonds that formed deep within the Earth’s mantle to the surface, where they now wait in the soil for anyone with a garden trowe

Ask HN: Why does the US Visa application website do a port-scan of my network?

I have recently installed this extension on FF: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/port-authorit... and yesterday I visited this website: https://ceac.state.gov/genniv/ and I got a notification that the website tried to do a port-scan of my private network. Is this a common thing? I have just recently installed the extension, so I am not sure if there are a lot of other websites who do it. Since looking into it, I noticed that uBlock Origin already has the default list "Block Outsi

CRDT: Text Buffer

← Back to the algorithm list Published on May 19th, 2024 Collaboratively editing strings of text is a common desire in peer-to-peer applications. For example, a note-taking app might represent each document as a single collaboratively-edited string of text. The algorithm presented here is one way to do this. It comes from a family of algorithms called CRDTs, which I will not describe here. It's similar to the approaches taken by popular collaborative text editing libraries such as Yjs and Auto

Octopolis and Octlantis

Settlements of gloomy octopuses in Australia Octopolis and Octlantis are two non-human settlements occupied by gloomy octopuses (Octopus tetricus) in Jervis Bay, on the south coast of New South Wales. Spotify copies Apple Music’s AutoMix feature before iOS 26 even ships

One of my favorite features in iOS 26 is AutoMix for Apple Music, which uses artificial intelligence to create DJ-like transitions between songs. Ahead of iOS 26 being released to everyone next month, Spotify is looking to steal some of Apple Music’s thunder with its own new spin on creating unique transitions between songs. In a blog post, Spotify explains that the feature allows users to create unique transitions between playlist songs by customizing things like volume, EQ, and effect curves

Changing these 10 settings on my Pixel phone greatly improved the user experience

Even older Pixel models can get in on the optimization tweaks. Kerry Wan/ZDNET ZDNET's key takeaways Google Pixel phones are notorious for having hidden settings that can greatly enhance the user experience. Croatian freediver held breath for 29 minutes

How Croatian freediver held breath for 29 minutes The world record for longest underwater breath-hold using oxygen is often viewed as much as a conjuring trick as an athletic feat – and at one time the title was indeed held by US magician David Blaine. But now a remarkable new mark has been set by a Croatian already recognised for his more conventional competitive freediving achievements. Vitomir Maričić has set a new Guinness World Record (GWR) of 29min 3sec for “the longest breath held volun

iMessage gets a new Drafts folder in iOS 26

The iPhone Messages app on iOS 26 gets a bunch of new filtering features, primarily targeted around dealing with spam and junk texts. But it also gets some filters that are generally useful too. For the first time, iMessage has a dedicated Drafts folder. This filters the conversation list to show only threads where you have a partly-written message. These new capabilities are exposed through a new filter button found at the top-right of the screen. This menu includes common sections like Messa
