The Download: humans in space, and India’s thorium ambitions

Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos are bitter rivals in the commercial space race, but they agree on one thing: Settling space is an existential imperative. Space is the place. The final frontier. It is our human destiny to transcend our home world and expand our civilization to extraterrestrial vistas. This belief has been mainstream for decades, but its rise has been positively meteoric in this new gilded age of astropreneurs. But as visions of giant orbital stations and Martian cities dance in ou

The AYN Odin 3 might solve the biggest problem with the Odin 2 Portal and Pocket 5

TL;DR AYN has revealed design renders for its upcoming Odin 3 gaming handheld. It looks like a mix between the Odin 2 Portal and Retroid Pocket 5, with an ergonomic grip. No specs have been revealed, but we should learn more soon. It’s been a few weeks since AYN first announced the follow-up to its flagship Odin 2, but the company has finally teased design renders in a 30-second YouTube video. It’s one of the year’s most anticipated releases, but the design itself is remarkably familiar. The

Google will throttle Pixel 10 charging, battery and that makes me upset

C. Scott Brown / Android Authority Google announced a mandatory Battery Health Assistance (BHA) feature for the Pixel 9a earlier this year. This feature essentially reduces the battery’s effective capacity and charging speeds as the cell ages, in the name of safety. This greatly concerned me, as the feature was optional for previously released Pixel phones. Now, Google has confirmed that this feature is also mandatory on the Pixel 10 series of phones. And this decision isn’t great at best and

The best VPN deals: Get up to 77 percent off NordVPN, ProtonVPN, Surfshark and others

A virtual private network (VPN) can save you a lot of money if you use it right. By changing your virtual location, you can use one streaming service to see shows that might be scattered between three or four in your home country. You can also trawl the world for discounts that only show up in a few select regions. And of course, you can't put a price on the joy of taking back your online business from intrusive ads and trackers. VPN providers are all competing to boost their subscriber counts,

‘The Wizard of Oz’ at the Sphere Has a Shocking 2-Second Cameo: David Zaslav

The Sphere’s version of The Wizard of Oz has already drawn controversy over its use of AI. Now we know another unsettling element has been introduced into the Hollywood classic: a likeness of Warner Bros. Discovery CEO and president David Zaslav. No, really: the exec, along with the Sphere’s executive chairman and CEO, James Dolan, will be superimposed on the faces of uncredited background characters in what are apparently blink-and-you’ll-miss-them appearances. The stunt is to celebrate the mo

Rocket Report: SpaceX achieved daily launch this week; ULA recovers booster

Welcome to Edition 8.08 of the Rocket Report! What a week it's been for SpaceX. The company completed its first successful Starship test flight in nearly a year, and while it wasn't perfect, it sets up SpaceX for far more ambitious tests ahead. SpaceX's workhorse rocket, the Falcon 9, launched six times since our last edition of the Rocket Report. Many of these missions were noteworthy in their own right, including the launch of the US military's X-37B spaceplane, an upgraded Dragon capsule to b

Eero Pro 7 Review: Smooth Sailing

Amazon’s Eero mesh range is tough to beat for folks seeking a set-and-forget mesh Wi-Fi system for their home. Simplicity, with a side of smart home support, makes the Eero Pro 7 a compelling prospect. It strikes a nice balance in Eero’s Wi-Fi 7 lineup, offering the faster 6-GHz band and better all-around performance than the entry-level Eero 7, while costing far less than the top-of-the-line Max 7. While I experienced teething troubles with systems like the Max 7 when Wi-Fi 7 was new, my time

Why my 12-year-old Kindle is still my favorite piece of tech

I’m a tech guy with plenty of gadgets I use regularly. These include my phone, tablet, smartwatch, Bluetooth speaker, laptop, headphones, earbuds, and more. But when I look at my electronics lineup, one device sticks out as a symbol of what great technology should be. It was cheap, is old, but still looks almost as new, and I have no reason whatsoever to buy a new one. It’s my Kindle, and I love everything about it. The Galaxy Watch 8 is the first smartwatch I’ve ever forgotten I was wearing

Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 The Samsung Galaxy Watch 8 is a sleek, lightweight smartwatch that combines smart features with the robust health tracking of Samsung Health. Nullable vs. Nullable in C#

Nullable vs nullable in C# One of the most unfortunate parts of the nullability narrative in C# is the reuse of the T? syntax to denote two completely separate concepts for value types and reference types. This leads to some odd and confusing behaviour. As you may know, nullable value types is a much older concept than nullable reference types. Nullable value types were introduced in C# 2.0, whereas nullable reference types came in C# 8.0. And they’re not the same. Nullable isn’t nullable. Fo

Probability of typing a wrong Bitcoin address

I heard someone say that Bitcoin is dangerous because you could easily make a typo when entering an address, sending money to the wrong person, and have no recourse. There are dangers associated with Bitcoin, such as losing a private key, but address typos are not a major concern. Checksums There are several kinds of Bitcoin addresses. Each is at least 20 bytes (160 bits) long, with at least 4 bytes (32 bits) of checksum. The chances of a typo resulting in a valid checksum are about 1 in 232.

We Asked Dentists: What's the Best Whitening Toothpaste of 2025?

Why we like it: Colgate Optic White Pro Series toothpaste is one whitening toothpaste that Dr. Fatima Khan, a dentist in Houston, Texas, recommends. Some of her reasons for recommending it include its trusted brand name and its 5% hydrogen peroxide whitening agent. Unlike other whitening agents that work by removing stains on the surface of the tooth, hydrogen peroxide can get inside the tooth so it whitens intrinsically as well as extrinsically. Sachar also recommends this toothpaste, saying,

Need a Horror Film Full of Twists and Turns? Watch This Free Futuristic Flick on Tubi

When it comes to watching horror movies, one of my favorite sub-genres is sci-fi horror. Give me the terror of deep space, futuristic worlds where things have gone terribly awry, and larger-than-life spaceships where the crews are trapped with unspeakable horrors. While Alien might be the most popular movie in this genre, there are some amazing sci-fi horror flicks out there just waiting to be discovered. One of my favorites is Pandorum. Released in 2009, it's is a claustrophobic trip into spac

DJI Mic 3 Review: The Best Wireless Mic Gets Better

When DJI announced the Mic 3 just 18 months after the excellent Mic 2, I didn’t really get it. The Mic 2 has been my own go-to wireless microphone (bought with my own money, no less) for over a year now, and it still feels new to me. What could justify yet another iteration so soon? It took about five seconds with the Mic 3 in my hands to understand exactly what DJI was thinking. The transmitter units are dramatically smaller and lighter than those on the Mic 2, so much so that they feel like e

The Wild, Citywide Scavenger Hunt That Ate San Francisco

On a Wednesday night in August, hundreds of people gathered in the lobby of Apple Cinemas in central San Francisco. To gain admission to the event, attendees had to say a secret code word to the crew working the door: three giggling children wearing oversize “SECURITY” caps. The throng inside hunted for QR codes on the walls and admired a makeshift art gallery that showcased a collection of paintings, each referencing a famous historical work—Vermeer’s Girl With a Pearl Earring, Munch’s The Scr
