Google wants to make sideloading Android apps safer by verifying developers’ identities

Mishaal Rahman / Android Authority TL;DR Google will soon verify the identities of developers who distribute Android apps outside the Play Store. Developers must submit their information to a new Android Developer Console, increasing their accountability for their apps. Rolling out in phases from September 2026, these new verification requirements are aimed at protecting users from malware by making it harder for malicious developers to remain anonymous. Most Android users acquire apps from

ChatGPT is reportedly scraping Google Search data to answer your questions - here's how

Anadolu / Contributor / Anadolu via Getty Follow ZDNET: Add us as a preferred source on Google. ZDNET's key takeaways Reports reveal that OpenAI uses Google Search data to answer some of users' questions. The topics that use Google Search data mostly surround news, sports, and financial markets. OpenAI retrieves the Google Search data using a third-party web-scraping tool. As more people consult ChatGPT for general inquiries, reports are pointing to OpenAI, the AI-powered chatbot's parent

These are the MagSafe and Qi2 accessories for the Pixel 10 I recommend

Rita El Khoury / Android Authority Sure, the new Pixel 10 phones come with a bunch of new features, but none of them even come close in substance to the arrival of Qi2 wireless charging. That’s one big upgrade for the Android ecosystem as a whole, one that adds so much convenience. On top of that, it opens up a whole new world of accessories for you to pick from — the entire array of MagSafe-compatible accessories can now work with the Pixel 10. Here are some of my favorite MagSafe/Qi2 accesso

Malicious Android apps with 19M installs removed from Google Play

Seventy-seven malicious Android apps with more than 19 million installs were delivering multiple malware families to Google Play users. This malware infiltration was discovered by Zscaler's ThreatLabs team while investigating a new infection wave with Anatsa (Tea Bot) banking trojan targeting Android devices. While most of the malicious apps (over 66%) included adware components, the most common Android malware was Joker, which researchers encountered in almost 25% of the analyzed apps. Once

New survey suggests Google has work to do with Pixel 10’s Pro Res Zoom

Rita El Khoury / Android Authority The Google Pixel 10 Pro phones introduced a Pro Res Zoom feature for improved long-range zoom. Google says this uses a diffusion-based AI model to effectively generate details. Don’t want to miss the best from Android Authority? Set us as a preferred source in Google Search to support us and make sure you never miss our latest exclusive reports, expert analysis, and much more. The Pixel Recorder’s Expressive redesign is rolling out now, but it’s not a total win

Hadlee Simons / Android Authority TL;DR The Pixel Recorder app has received a visual overhaul in line with Google’s Material 3 Expressive style. Expect changes like a larger play button, more prominent toggles, and larger waveforms. The app also takes a step back by moving some useful shortcut icons into the three-dot menu. The Recorder app is one of my favorite Pixel phone features, owing to its on-device transcriptions, cloud backup functionality, and web-based access. Over the years, the

5 Android phones you should buy instead of the Google Pixel 10

C. Scott Brown / Android Authority Google’s Pixel 10 series is an impressive showing, and among all the new phones, it’s the base model Pixel 10 that has stolen so much of the spotlight. With a triple camera setup (including a new dedicated telephoto camera), Qi2 magnetic charging, and the same Tensor G5 chip inside the Pixel 10 Pro models, is there any reason not to buy the $799 Pixel 10? Depending on what you’re looking to get out of your next Android phone, there may be after all. We expec

Quick Share for iPhones is still in the works, and here’s proof (APK teardown)

Ryan Haines / Android Authority TL;DR A teardown of the latest Google Play Services app has revealed evidence that Google is still working on Quick Share for iPhones. We were also able to view a screen confirming that you need to sign in to share with iPhones. This comes almost a year after we first learned Google might be working on Quick Share for iOS and MacOS. We first heard late last year that Google could be working on Quick Share for iOS and MacOS. This would be a welcome addition, al

PSA: Canceling your Pixel 10 pre-order could cost you your existing Google One subscription

TL;DR Google is offering free yearly AI Pro and Google One subscriptions to those who pre-order the Pixel 10, and will compensate those who already pay for those services. But if you cancel your pre-order, Google will cancel your existing subscription, besides revoking those benefits. If you re-order another Pixel 10 device, you may not be eligible for these perks as they are limited to once per customer. Google’s Pixel 10 devices can be fairly tempting, especially for the new Pixelsnap charg

Google tests QR code verification for text messages

Google is changing the way you confirm if contacts are legit. The company has begun rolling out a QR code to verify that the person you're communicating with is, in fact, who they say they are, 9to5Google reports. The feature is currently available in beta. An end-to-end encryption card isn't anything new, but verifying the encryption meant seeing an 80-digit code you could compare. Now, you'll still go Google Messages, tap their name and then go to their details page. But, instead, there will

Google Pixel 10 Pro XL vs. Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra: I tested both flagships, and the winner is not so obvious

The Google Pixel 10 Pro XL (left) next to the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra (right). Kerry Wan/ZDNET The Google Pixel 10 Pro XL is one of the hottest new Android phones right now, but how does it stack up to the current champ? Ahead of last week's Made by Google event, I spent an intimate morning handling both the new Pixel model and the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra to determine which one deserves a spot in your pocket. The answer is... complicated. Also: Everything announced at Made by Google 2025: Pi

2.5B Gmail users endangered after Google database hack

How the phishing attacks work Initial reports of attempted attacks have already been seen on Reddit, which are likely related to the data leak. Users describe how alleged Google employees have contacted them by phone to inform them of a security breach in their accounts. In these scam attempts, attackers are trying to take over Gmail accounts by triggering alleged “account resets” and then intercepting passwords to subsequently lock out the account holders. Another attack method involves “dang

Local Restaurant Exhausted as Google AI Keeps Telling Customers About Daily Specials That Don't Exist

If you're trying to find out what a restaurant has to offer, you might look up its menu, or go to its Facebook page. Hell, you could call and ask. But that's all démodé. Why not query an AI chatbot, a piece of software notorious for inventing facts out of the tokenized ether of the internet, and treat its answer like the word of God? Here's why: because you'd annoy the hell out of the restaurant. Just ask the beleaguered owners of the Montana eatery Stefanina's Wentzville, who are begging thei

The days of custom Android ROMs are numbered, and Google is to blame

Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority Android used to be synonymous with freedom. If you didn’t like your phone’s interface or bloatware, you could simply install a custom ROM — the colloquial term for a forked version of the Android operating system. But that golden era is quickly disappearing, as yet another major Android fork has run into troubles. CalyxOS, a major privacy-focused Android distribution, announced a sudden freeze on future releases earlier this month. While the project isn’t di

The Pixel 10 is unquestionably the best phone for people fed up with the iPhone

Google has tried for years to lure iPhone owners to Pixel phones. This has even manifested in the company’s Best Friends Forever series of videos, as well as an RCS messaging campaign targeting Apple. That’s in addition to features like the Android Switch app and wired transfer capabilities to help make it easier to move your data. Now that the Pixel 10 phones are here, though, they might just be the best Android phones for people coming from iPhones. And it doesn’t have anything to do with qui

Google’s rollout of Bluetooth audio sharing on Pixels has been a mess

TL;DR Google’s new Pixel Buds 2a lack Bluetooth audio sharing, highlighting a confusing and inconsistent implementation of the Auracast feature across Pixel devices. The feature is mysteriously disabled on the Pixel Buds Pro 2 when paired with a Pixel phone and artificially blocked on budget A-series phones. This haphazard approach hinders the adoption of the universal Auracast standard, which could solve audio sharing issues for all consumers. Google’s newly announced Pixel Buds 2a are a big

Google Pixel 10 Pro vs. iPhone 16 Pro: I've used both handsets, and there's a clear winner

Kerry Wan/ZDNET After the success of launching four flagship phones last year, Google is set to continue the trend with the new Pixel 10 series. The Google Pixel 10 Pro stands out as potentially the best option for many people. With a starting price of $999, it offers a compelling blend of premium features borrowed from its more expensive sibling, all in the more manageable size of the standard Pixel 10. Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold vs. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7: I compared both Androids, and here's the winner

Joseph Maldonado and Kerry Wan/ZDNET The Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold has finally arrived, and it isn't taking on the Galaxy Z Fold 7 with a generational design leap. Instead, it competes by adding quality-of-life features -- a couple of which are industry-firsts for a foldable phone. If you are ready to upgrade from a slab phone to a foldable one, now is the best time to do so. However, it can be confusing to make a decision when both Google and Samsung book-style foldables are so good this year.

The Pixel Tablet 2 would’ve been great with Android’s new PC-like keyboard and mouse controls

C. Scott Brown / Android Authority Right after blowing our minds with the new AI-powered Voice Translate feature on the Pixel 10, Google went and dashed our hopes of seeing a new Pixel Tablet anytime soon. The company told Bloomberg that it has “paused development on a tablet overhaul until it figures out a meaningful future for the category,” which sure sounds like Google has given up on tablets once again. That’s a huge shame, though, because Android has gotten way better on tablets since Goo

I'm a diehard Google Pixel fan - here's why I'm not upgrading to the latest model

Joseph Maldonado/ZDNET ZDNET's key takeaways Google's new Pixel 10 isn't worth the upgrade for me. It comes down to cost, color, and lack of new killer features. Too much AI is also a deterrent. The new Pixel 10 is upon us, and, as usual, Google wants us all to upgrade. For many of us, trading in our current model for a discount on the newer version has become a yearly tradition. I've done it ever since Google adopted the trade-in policy, and it has served me well. However, this year is di

Why the Pixel 10 is making this longtime iPhone user reconsider their next phone

Joseph Maldonado/ZDNET ZDNET's key takeaways Google's PixelSnap is the biggest upgrade for me on the company's new phones. The $799 Pixel 10 now comes with a telephoto camera, a sizeable upgrade for the base model. Gemini AI is much smarter and more capable than Siri. I wish Google would fix this one quirky limitation with Fi

Megan Ellis / Android Authority I’ve used Google Fi for almost three years now, and it’s been mostly smooth sailing. Although Google doesn’t promote its cellular services very much, it has slowly but surely released updates that continue to improve the service, all while keeping prices relatively competitive. There is plenty to love about Google’s offering in a competitive market, but one quirk has me considering other options. Have you tried Google's wireless service? 81 votes Yes, I'm curren

The Pixel 10 Pro Fold isn’t as slick as my Galaxy Z Fold 7, but I envy it for these reasons

A lot of people seem to be dunking on the Pixel 10 Pro Fold for being a little too thick around the edges. And it’s true, next to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 7, Google’s latest foldable may not look nearly as elegant or futuristic. The company clearly wasn’t chasing thinness like the rest of the players in the foldable game, and the result is a foldable phone that looks chunkier and is even a tad heavier than its predecessor. However, Google’s lack of attention to the size of the Pixel 10 Pro Fold i

Why I'm recommending this Google Pixel 10 model to most people (and don't regret it)

Kerry Wan/ZDNET ZDNET's key takeaways The Google Pixel 10 packs the Tensor G5 chipset, a new telephoto lens, and other long-awaited hardware upgrades. On the software side, the Google Pixel 10's AI suite can predict your needs, edit photos for you, and more. While packing all of these upgrades, the Pixel 10 still retails for $799. I compared the best smartwatches from Google and Apple - and there's a clear winner

Kerry Wan/ZDNET A new Pixel Watch is hitting the shelves right in time for marathon season. Google unveiled the Pixel Watch 4 at its annual Made By Google event in New York earlier this week. The watch comes packed with several upgrades that rival its predecessor, like a revamped Fitbit experience, updates to Gemini, and a brighter display. Retailing at $350 for the 41mm and $400 for the 45mm, the smartwatch is available for preorder now and ships October 9. Also: Everything announced at Made

The Fairphone 6 no longer feels like a compromise (except in the US)

Posts from this author will be added to your daily email digest and your homepage feed. The Fairphone 6 arrives almost two years after the 5, a testament to the company’s approach to the upgrade cycle. If anything, I suspect the company would be frustrated if Fairphone 5 owners were considering a new model already — these are phones to keep, to repair, and to hold on to until the bitter end. The newest Fairphone continues the company’s commitment to user-repairability, long-term customer suppo

As a Pixel fan, here’s why I’m not going to use Google’s Pixel Journal app

If you’re a Pixel fan like me, this past week was a pretty fun one. Made by Google 2025 has come and gone, and as cringe-worthy as the event itself may have been, Google still gave us plenty to talk about — including its new Pixel Journal app. Two years after Apple launched its Journal app on the iPhone, Pixel Journal is debuting on the Pixel 10 series to give Pixel owners their own out-of-the-box journaling app — and it looks good! Pixel Journal runs entirely on-device, uses AI to help you thi
