Popular Japanese smartphone games have introduced external payment systems

TOKYO - Nearly 70 percent of popular Japanese smartphone games have introduced external payment systems for items and services to avoid hefty commission fees from U.S. tech giants Google LLC and Apple Inc., a Kyodo News tally showed. The move comes ahead of a new Japanese law tightening regulations on Google and Apple, which dominate smartphone platforms, set to take full effect in December. The legislation requires the two companies to open their payment systems. Almost all users currently do

For some people, music doesn’t connect with any of the brain’s reward circuits

“I was talking with my colleagues at a conference 10 years ago and I just casually said that everyone loves music,” recalls Josep Marco Pallarés, a neuroscientist at the University of Barcelona. But it was a statement he started to question almost immediately, given there were clinical cases in psychiatry where patients reported deriving absolutely no pleasure from listening to any kind of tunes. So, Pallarés and his team spent the past 10 years researching the neural mechanisms behind a condit

Trump administration official says some CHIPS Act companies won't need to give up equity

Last week, the Trump administration said it might take a stake in Intel in exchange for the $10.86 billion in federal grants the company is receiving from the Chips and Science (CHIPS) Act. However, not all companies receiving funds under the same program will need to give up equity, The Wall Street Journal has reported. Companies like TSMC and Micron that increased their US investments won't have any additional obligations, according to a government official familiar with the matter. Ealier, c

Digg’s new app is basic, but a great start

Meet the researcher hosting a scientific conference by and for AI

That idea is not without its detractors. Among other issues, many feel AI is not capable of the creative thought needed in research, makes too many mistakes and hallucinations, and may limit opportunities for young researchers. Nevertheless, a number of scientists and policymakers are very keen on the promise of AI scientists. The US government’s AI Action Plan describes the need to “invest in automated cloud-enabled labs for a range of scientific fields.” Some researchers think AI scientists c

I found the best app for Material 3 Expressive widgets; here’s how to use it

Zac Kew-Denniss / Android Authority Google is implementing a big redesign of Android with Material 3 Expressive. This updated design language will spread across apps and Android itself with the upcoming Android 16 QPR1 update. And despite updating most of its apps, Google is overlooking widgets again with this release, keeping the same old Material You design for several of them, while Apple and other Android OEMs like Samsung have taken widget design more seriously. But if, like me, you’d lik

GPT-5 usage limitations: what are they, how does this compare to GPT-4 family?

Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority GPT-5 arrived a few weeks ago, though its rollout hasn’t been entirely smooth. While the model shows plenty of promise, its debut also meant the abrupt removal of every other GPT model from ChatGPT’s user-facing UI. Since then, some old models have returned, and there have been a few other changes to the way the system works. Furthermore, many of the initial GPT-5 usage limits have been temporarily enhanced since launch. Let’s dive in and take a closer look

QLED vs. LED: Which Is Better?

Two of the most popular TV technologies are QLED and the Q-less, regular LED. These two technologies are functionally similar, but their performance tends to be quite different. Generally speaking, QLED TVs are typically more expensive (though that price difference has decreased significantly in the last few years), but are also usually brighter and have better colors. It's worth mentioning up front that both QLED and traditional LED TVs are versions of LCD. They both use LCD panels to create a

Two Years After Maui Burned, Researchers Reveal the Wildfire’s True Death Toll

In August 2023, downed power lines on Maui, Hawaii, sparked a wildfire that quickly exploded into multiple, fast-moving blazes fanned by high winds. Over several days, the fires reduced much of the town of Lāhainā to ashes, displacing thousands and killing more than 100 people. New research published Thursday, August 22, in the journal Frontiers in Climate suggests this disaster also caused a population-wide increase in mortality beyond what the official death count captured. By calculating the

WhatsApp is working on a voicemail-like feature

Heads up if you tend to dodge, ignore, or genuinely miss calls on WhatsApp: the app is working on a voicemail-like feature. Here’s how it will work. According to WABetaInfo (via Tecnoblog), the feature was introduced in the latest Android beta, but not yet on iOS. They explain that if a call goes unanswered, a new “Record voice message” button pops up at the bottom of the screen, alongside the Call again and Cancel options. This lets the user quickly record a voice message, rather than either

Anduril, Blue Origin to study how to transport cargo from orbit to Earth for the Pentagon

Blue Origin and Anduril have landed new study contracts with the U.S. Air Force to explore how their technology, including rockets, could move military cargo around the world. The contracts under the Air Force’s Rocket Cargo program are relatively small — Blue Origin’s comes in at $1.37 million and Anduril’s at $1 million. But they could be the first steps in revolutionizing how the Pentagon transports cargo. Study contracts like these are also a strong signal as to which players will later c

In the long run, LLMs make us dumber

The comfort we get when offloading our cognitive load to LLMs is bad for us. Cognitive load should exist, and if we reduce it too much – if we stop thinking – we can actually unlearn how to think. Kids who always choose the easy route and copy their homework from other students eventually find themselves completely clueless about what’s going on in school. Someone who always lets their spouse handle all the bills and banking may one day be unable to manage even a simple payment on their own. A

Tesla Takes So Long to Report Crash Data, Even Trump’s Regulators Are Taking Notice

It turns out it’s actually possible for a corporation to drag its feet for so long that even the Trump administration takes issue with it. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced that it will investigate Tesla’s habit of taking months to submit accident reports that involve the company’s driver-assistance technology, according to a report from Reuters. Just how late is Tesla getting its crash report information to the NHTSA? The agency asks that companies submit reports wit
