The announcement follows a livestream late Wednesday that Musk held with xAI colleagues where the billionaire unveiled Grok 4, the latest AI model from xAI, his multibillion-dollar initiative to rival OpenAI and Google. EU regulators are once again investigating TikTok over data transfers to China

TikTok is in more regulatory hot water. Only a couple of months after it slapped TikTok with a hefty fine over data transfers to China, Ireland’s Data Protection Commission (DPC) is opening a fresh investigation into the platform. During the previous probe, TikTok claimed that European Economic Area (EEA) user data was stored on servers outside China. It said that TikTok staff in China accessed such data remotely. The DPC concluded the investigation on April 30 and fined TikTok 530 million euro

Google’s working on a Gemini tool for generating illustrated Storybooks (APK teardown)

Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority TL;DR Gemini on Android has been working to implement new Storybooks, Timeline, and Mindmap options. While Timeline and Mindmap come from NotebookLM on the web, Storybooks could be a new Gem for creating illustrated books. Storybooks is not yet functional in Gemini, but we have been able to uncover an animation associated with it. For as powerful as generative AI systems are, their open-ended flexibility can also be a bit of a curse, especially if we’re ha

Author of William the Conqueror's 'Medieval Big Data' Project Revealed

The findings challenge long-held assumptions about the scale and intent of William the Conqueror’s great survey. Drawing on the earliest surviving manuscript of the survey, known as Exon Domesday, researchers argue that the survey was not simply a means of maximising tax but a far more ambitious and intricate exercise in governmental control - akin to an 11th-century form of big data processing. Professor Stephen Baxter (University of Oxford), Professor Julia Crick (King’s College London), and

Optimizing a Math Expression Parser in Rust

Optimizing a Math Expression Parser in Rust Optimizing a Math Expression Parser in Rust Table of contents In a previous post I explored how to optimize file parsing for max speed. This time, we’ll look at a different, self-contained problem: writing a math expression parser in Rust, and making it as fast and memory-efficient as possible. Let’s say we want to parse simple math expressions with addition, subtraction, and parentheses. For example: 4 + 5 + 2 - 1 => 10 (4 + 5) - (2 + 1) => 6 (1

AI Is a Lousy Chef

After my sage plant struggled for years in a shadowy corner of my roof-deck planter garden, I moved it into the sunniest spot up there. Boy did that make a difference. It also meant I needed to figure out what to do with all the leaves it produced. As luck would have it, I was also trying out AI cooking platforms. That night, I plugged the prompt “recipe using brats and lots of sage” into an AI recipe generator and it gave me what it called “sage infused brats skillet with caramelized onions.”

Elon Musk’s xAI launches Grok 4 alongside a $300 monthly subscription

Elon Musk’s AI company, xAI, late on Wednesday released its latest flagship AI model, Grok 4, and unveiled a new $300-per-month AI subscription plan, SuperGrok Heavy. Grok is xAI’s answer to models like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, and can analyze images and respond to questions. In recent months, Grok has become more deeply integrated into Musk’s social network, X, which was recently acquired by xAI. However, that has also put Grok’s misbehavior front and center for millions of users.

Pope Leo Signed a Popplio ‘Pokémon’ Card in the Cutest Vatican Sanctioned Interaction

One Pokémon fan traveled across the land and searched far and wide to find Pope Leo XIV with a Popplio card in hand for a truly delightful interaction. The meeting took place at the Vatican, where recently elected Pope Leo XIV greeted visitors for blessings. The Pokémon aficionado (known as ReptileCake on Reddit) took a card of Popplio, the water starter from the 7th generation of the card game, to get signed as well as another card to be blessed by the pontiff as a memento. The interaction to

Before Grok's HitlerGate Debacle, X's Head of Product Tweeted Something Absolutely Wild

What the hell is going on at Twitter? Build-a-Brute A mere week ago, tech founder Nikita Bier joined Elon Musk's X-formerly-Twitter as the company's new head of product. "Ladies and gentlemen, I’ve officially posted my way to the top," Bier tweeted at the time, calling X the "most important social network in the world." Shortly thereafter, Musk's AI chatbot Grok abruptly turned into a full-blown Nazi on X. It started referring to itself as "MechaHitler," and making outrageously bigoted claim

COO exit creates unanswered questions about Apple Watch and Health future

Apple made an interesting omission in yesterday’s chief operating officer transition announcement. Design, which previously reported to COO Jeff Williams, will soon report to CEO Tim Cook, but the press release stopped short of explaining where Williams’ other product responsibility will go when he leaves. What happens to Apple Watch and Health after the COO transition? Operations veteran Sabih Khan will take over as COO later this month, but Jeff Williams will hang around the company throug

Blok is using AI personas to simulate real-world app usage

AI-powered coding tools like Cursor, Replit, Claude Code, and Lovable are helping developers write many lines of code every day to ship products faster. However, app makers still have to rely on either shipping full beta versions of their apps or using simulation software to gauge how upcoming features will work. Blok, a company that is coming out of stealth, allows developers to use AI to simulate different user personas to test an app’s features and learn how to make their apps better. The c

The MFA You Trust Is Lying to You – and Here's How Attackers Exploit It

Still getting login codes via text or authenticator apps? You’re not alone—and that’s a big problem. What used to feel like a smart security layer is now one of the easiest ways for attackers to gain access to your accounts. First we were told to use SMS for MFA. Then we were told: “Don’t use SMS for MFA, use an authenticator app instead.” And while that may seem like a step forward, it’s still fundamentally flawed. Authenticator apps do improve over SMS by avoiding message interception, but t

Roku Streaming Stick HD 2025 Drops to a Record Low, Amazon Clears Out the Fire TV Stick Rival

Grok chatbot silenced as even Musk saw how awful it was

X owner Elon Musk recently implemented changes to the platform’s AI chatbot Grok, explicitly telling it not to trust mainstream media and to be less politically correct. Obviously there was no way anyone could possibly predict how that would turn out, so it’s a complete shock that Musk has been forced to silence it … Musk recently decided it would be a good idea to give Grok explicit instructions to be less “politically correct” in its responses. X users have been sharing a wide range of antis

I love Roku for keeping its ads unobtrusive - which is why this Amazon deal worries me

Maria Diaz/ZDNET Are you a cord-cutter? The last time my family paid for cable TV was in 2017. Since then, we have watched all our TV entertainment on streaming services. While some shows are still difficult to find, nearly everything is available if you're willing to look for it or pay for it. If you watch TV via streaming, you need a device to download and present the stream. Most smartphones, tablets and computers have apps that will do this. Also: Your Roku has secret menus and settings -

Wildfires are challenging air quality monitoring infrastructure

Ten years ago, Tracey Holloway, an atmospheric scientist at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, would have said that air pollution in the United States was a huge success story. “Our air had been getting cleaner and cleaner almost everywhere, for almost every pollutant,” she said. But in June 2023, as wildfire smoke from Canada spread, the air quality dropped to historically low levels in her home state of Wisconsin. Just last month, the region’s air quality dipped once more to unhealthy level

Springer Nature book on machine learning is full of made-up citations

Would you pay $169 for an introductory ebook on machine learning with citations that appear to be made up? If not, you might want to pass on purchasing Mastering Machine Learning: From Basics to Advanced, published by Springer Nature in April. Based on a tip from a reader, we checked 18 of the 46 citations in the book. Two-thirds of them either did not exist or had substantial errors. And three researchers cited in the book confirmed the works they supposedly authored were fake or the citation
