OpenAI to auto-watermark ChatGPT text in EU to meet AI Act rules

OpenAI announced it will automatically watermark text generated by ChatGPT for users in the European Union, with the feature available but off by default elsewhere. The watermarking method, called textGrain, embeds subtle word-choice patterns detectable only with a specialized key, and OpenAI plans to grant detector access to select researchers and organizations through an approval process.

Google releases Nano Banana 2.1 image model with upgraded visual quality

Google announced Nano Banana 2.1, an update to its image generation model that follows Nano Banana 2.0's February release of 4K output support. The company says the new version improves visual design, mask-based editing, and subject consistency, with fixes for tiling artifacts, better text rendering, multi-image fusion of up to 14 reference images, search grounding, and adjustable thinking levels.

Thiel Fellow Sigil Wen launches on-device AI assistant Underdog in invite-only beta

Sigil Wen, a Thiel Fellow and former teenage hacker-house resident among early AI luminaries, has released an invite-only beta of Underdog, an AI assistant that runs entirely on a user's own device rather than in the cloud. Wen built a companion inference engine called Husky to run the models efficiently on Macs and Windows PCs, with Linux, iPhone and Android support planned. The assistant uses a 27-billion parameter model fine-tuned from Qwen3.8 27B and encrypts credentials for accounts it's authorized to access.

Mother Jones reporter says Tumbler Ridge shooter's ChatGPT use worse than previously disclosed

Mother Jones national affairs editor Mark Follman reports he reviewed significant portions of chat logs between Tumbler Ridge shooter Jesse Van Rootselaar and ChatGPT, saying the content is far more disturbing and extensive than the public has known. OpenAI has already confirmed it flagged and shut down one account used by Van Rootselaar, failed to alert Canadian authorities, and missed a second account she created afterward. Van Rootselaar killed her mother, half-brother, five students and an education assistant before taking her own life on Feb. 10.

Multiple AI-generated Photoshop clones emerge by October 2026, writer reports

A commentator tracking AI-built software says several vibecoded Photoshop alternatives now exist, built using agentic coding tools rather than a single prompt. The author argues this disproves the earlier claim that no viable clones of industry-standard tools like Photoshop could be produced through AI-assisted coding, noting the clones can be verified against real benchmarks such as layers, blend modes, smart objects and PSD file compatibility.

William Golding's 'Lord of the Flies' published after multiple rejections

William Golding, a Salisbury schoolmaster battling personal struggles, completed his novel 'Lord of the Flies' at age 40. After numerous rejections from publishers including Jonathan Cape and Faber & Faber, the book was finally accepted and published, marking a significant milestone in his literary career. The novel offers a stark contrast to earlier adventure stories like 'The Coral Island' by R.M. Ballantyne, challenging romanticized views of human nature and childhood innocence.

ClickFix malware campaigns hide payloads behind DNS lookups, researchers find

Security researchers at Flare identified a ClickFix social-engineering campaign distributing the CrocoRat remote access Trojan and cryptocurrency stealer via a misspelled domain showing a fake house-wiring image. Instead of fetching malware directly, the pasted PowerShell command queries an attacker-controlled DNS TXT record, which returns instructions for the next stage of the attack.

Paramount Skydance to merge HBO Max, Paramount+ and Discovery+ into one service

Paramount Skydance confirmed it has completed its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, finalizing the $111 billion merger that followed Netflix's abandoned bid for WBD earlier this year. The newly combined company announced that its streaming properties—HBO Max, Paramount+ and Discovery+—will eventually be folded into a single unified streaming service.

Forescout finds most healthcare devices lack post-quantum encryption readiness

Forescout Technologies analyzed roughly 2.5 million devices across more than 50 healthcare organizations and found widespread gaps in support for post-quantum cryptography. Only about half of IT devices supported SSH implementations capable of PQC, versus 16% of operational technology and just 6% of Internet of Medical Things devices such as patient monitors and insulin pumps. The firm also found over 5,500 Internet-reachable systems holding medical records and imaging data, only 31% of which used TLS 1.3, the protocol needed for current PQC standards.
