Apple's iOS 27 update brings a major Apple Intelligence overhaul, including a much-improved Siri, but some newer iPhones now need up to 14GB of free storage for full AI functionality, compared to 8GB previously. This higher requirement applies specifically to iPhone 17 Pro, Pro Max, Air, Duo, and 18 Pro models, while other iPhones still only need 8GB.
MediaTek unveiled the Dimensity 9600 Pro, built on TSMC's 2nm process, alongside the 3nm Dimensity 9600M for a broader range of premium phones. The Pro chip features a dedicated neural processing unit for on-device generative AI and boosts prompt processing speed by 51% over its predecessor. MediaTek did not name partner manufacturers or give launch dates for devices using the chips.
European startup Desert Ant Labs has released a suite of 18 small specialized machine learning models—12 stable and six in beta—for tasks like transcription, audio cleanup, PII redaction, and language identification, all designed to run locally on devices rather than through cloud APIs. The models are accessible through a single SDK covering Swift, Kotlin, and JavaScript, and are free to use for up to 100,000 monthly active devices.
Anker introduced MindBase, a device positioned as a central controller for connected homes, combining Matter compatibility with local AI processing and built-in network-attached storage. The product aims to manage smart home devices while also handling data storage and AI tasks directly on the hardware rather than relying solely on the cloud.
