FBI says China’s Salt Typhoon hacked at least 200 US companies

A Chinese-backed hacking campaign that previously hacked into nine U.S. telecommunication and internet providers is now confirmed to have hacked at least 200 American companies, according to the FBI’s top cyber chief. FBI Assistant Director Brett Leatherman told The Washington Post that the hackers, dubbed Salt Typhoon, also broke into companies in 80 countries, revealing for the first time the global scale of the Chinese spying campaign. Leatherman didn’t name the hacked companies. AT&T, Veri

With Starship Flight 10, SpaceX prioritized resilience over perfection

SpaceX has long marketed Starship as a fully and rapidly reusable rocket that’s designed to deliver thousands of pounds of cargo to Mars and make life multiplanetary. But reusability at scale means a space vehicle that can tolerate mishaps and faults, so that a single failure doesn’t spell a mission-ending catastrophe. The 10th test flight on Tuesday evening demonstrated SpaceX’s focus on fault tolerance. In a post-flight update, SpaceX said the test stressed “the limits of vehicle capabilities

Astrophysicists find no 'hair' on black holes

According to Albert Einstein’s general theory of relativity, the behavior of a black hole depends on two numbers: how heavy it is, and how fast it is rotating. And that’s it. Black holes are said to have “no hair” — no features that distinguish them from their fellows with the same mass and spin. With new data, it has started to become possible to test this no-hair conjecture. Astronomers have detected hundreds of signals from colliding black holes over the past 10 years. In these dramatic even

Global Salt Typhoon hacking campaigns linked to Chinese tech firms

The U.S. National Security Agency (NSA), the UK's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), and partners from over a dozen countries have linked the Salt Typhoon global hacking campaigns to three China-based technology firms. According to the joint advisories [NSA, NCSC], Sichuan Juxinhe Network Technology Co. Ltd., Beijing Huanyu Tianqiong Information Technology Co., and Sichuan Zhixin Ruijie Network Technology Co. Ltd. have provided cyber products and services to China's Ministry of State Securi

The revived Acclaim will reveal its 2026 lineup in a September 10 showcase

Acclaim Entertainment, a big name in licensed games in the '90s, is "returning." (Although, much like the new Atari, this is technically a different company that bought the old trademark.) The new Acclaim will focus on publishing indie games and reviving classic franchises. We don't know much beyond that, but we'll learn more on September 10 in the Play Acclaim Showcase. The company's March announcement of its revival hinted at the resurrection of old franchises. But it's unclear which of its c

Last-Minute Software Patch Saves Jupiter Probe Ahead of Critical Venus Flyby

An exceptionally heavy interplanetary probe is on an eight-year journey to Jupiter, using the gravity of Earth and Venus to propel it on its path toward the gas giant. Just weeks before its scheduled flyby of Venus, the European Space Agency’s JUICE mission went silent, threatening its ability to perform the planetary encounter. Unable to communicate with the spacecraft, teams of engineers got to work on figuring out the problem under a tight schedule, hoping their efforts would reach JUICE as

Eddy Cue wanted Apple to acquire two big companies, but Tim Cook said no

A report from The Information yesterday offered a variety of interesting details about Apple’s potential acquisition targets in the artificial intelligence category. One thing I found particularly fascinating in the story was the tidbit that Eddy Cue, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Services, has regularly pushed for Apple to make big acquisitions, only to be shot down by Apple CEO Tim Cook. Apple, Tesla, and Netflix The report describes Eddy Cue as “one of the biggest advocates inside Apple

New Fossils Reveal Ankylosaur With Armor Unlike Any Other Animal, Living or Dead

Ankylosaurs were squat and thick four-legged dinosaurs with club tails and tough body armor. In other words, invincible Pokémon. A new fossil discovery, however, has revealed that the earliest ankylosaurs were several orders of magnitude more badass than their descendants. In a study published today in the journal Nature, researchers describe the partial skeleton of a Spicomellus, a genus of early ankylosaurs, unearthed in Morocco and dating to around 165 million years ago. The finding includes

RFK Jr. Promises to Reveal the ‘Cause’ of Autism Next Month

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is apparently about to solve a mystery that countless doctors and researchers have failed to crack. This week, the Secretary of Health and Human Services and longtime vaccine skeptic teased that he will reveal the cause(s) of autism spectrum disorder next month. Kennedy made the claim during President Donald Trump’s lengthy cabinet meeting Tuesday. After being prompted by Trump, RFK Jr. stated that his agency will announce having found “certain interventions” that are “cle

Lawmaker: Trump’s Golden Dome will end the madness, and that’s not a good thing

"The underlying issue here is whether US missile defense should remain focused on the threat from rogue states and... accidental launches, and explicitly refrain from countering missile threats from China or Russia," DesJarlais said. He called the policy of Mutually Assured Destruction "outdated." President Donald Trump speaks alongside Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth in the Oval Office at the White House on May 20, 2025, in Washington, DC. President Trump announced his plans for the Golden D

Under pressure after setbacks, SpaceX’s huge rocket finally goes the distance

STARBASE, Texas—SpaceX launched the 10th test flight of the company's Starship rocket Tuesday evening, sending the stainless steel spacecraft halfway around the world to an on-target splashdown in the Indian Ocean. The largely successful mission for the world's largest rocket was an important milestone for SpaceX's Starship program after months of repeated setbacks, including three disappointing test flights and a powerful explosion on the ground that destroyed the ship that engineers were orig

Terraton wants to be the McDonald’s of biochar

If there’s one thing McDonald’s has done for the world, it’s made starting a burger restaurant relatively straightforward. Franchisees buy into the system, and in return they get equipment, marketing, and even an operating manual. Terraton wants to bring that same model to biochar, a technology that turns agricultural waste into a carbon dioxide-sequestering fertilizer. Terraton recently raised a $11.5 million seed round for it’s “business-in-a-box” approach to biochar project development, the

HSBC apologises as app and online banking go down

HSBC apologises as app and online banking go down HSBC has apologised after customers were left unable to access online banking or use its app in the UK, preventing some from accessing their accounts. Thousands of people have reported problems on outage-checking site Downdetector since the issues first emerged at 11:00 BST on Wednesday. According to HSBC's service status website, customers can still access their accounts by phone and in-person, and card payments are unaffected. "We're really

Poll: Have you ever traveled with your portable projector?

If it feels like you’ve seen more ads for pocket-, backpack-, and even can-sized projectors lately, you’re not imagining it. Once a novelty, small form beamers are carving out a solid place in the mainstream market. Part of the appeal is obvious: today’s portable projectors aren’t the dim, clunky boxes you may remember from your school library. Brands are cranking out units with higher resolutions (even 4K), laser and LED light sources, and wireless smarts that make setup simple. Meanwhile, aut

SpaceX's giant Starship Mars rocket nails critical 10th test flight

SpaceX's Starship megarocket took to the skies for the 10th time ever today (Aug. 26), on a bold test flight that marked a big bounceback from recent failures. Starship, the largest and most powerful rocket ever built, lifted off from SpaceX's Starbase site in South Texas today at 7:30 p.m. EDT (2330 GMT; 6:30 p.m. local Texas time). That was two days later than originally planned; an issue with ground systems at Starbase forced a scrub on Sunday (Aug. 24), and bad weather caused another one on

My scheduler operations implementation A benefit of working on your own operating system is that you’re free from the usual "restraints" of collaboration and real applications. That has always been a major factor in my interest in osdev. 2025 VW Jetta GLI: Save the manuals, but not like this

Manual transmissions have gone the way of the dodo, but you can still find a few out there. Bless Volkswagen for keeping the helical gears turning, both literally and figuratively. The 2025 Jetta GLI, Volkswagen's sporty sedan, still offers a gear lever with actual gears attached at the other end, and a third pedal hanging down from under the dash. Meanwhile, Golf GTI fans are still sobbing in their beer because 2024 was the last model year you could row your own in the hot hatch—now it's paddle

SpaceX Starship Finally Pulls Off a Successful Test Flight

Elon Musk and his SpaceX team can breathe a collective sigh of relief. After days of postponements, Starship was finally able to launch its tenth test could flight from the launch pad in Starbase, Texas. SpaceX's largest and most powerful rocket lifted off this Tuesday, August 26 at 7:30pm ET, reached an altitude of 192 kilometers, and embarked on a suborbital trajectory at more than 26,000 kilometers per hour towards the Indian Ocean, where the spacecraft splashed down an hour after liftoff.

Labor Day sales include a four-pack of Apple AirTags for $70

If you're thinking about getting some of Apple's AirTags, now's the time to act — Amazon currently has a four-pack on sale for $70. That's one of the lowest prices we've seen outside the big sales on Black Friday and Prime Day. For Apple users, AirTags offer some large advantages over rival trackers. Wahoo Kickr Run Review: a (Mostly) Screen-Free Treadmill

Ask any serious runner and they’ll tell you that treadmills are usually the bane of their existence. Alas, for folks who don’t live in Mediterranean climates, they’re a necessary winter evil that keeps us fitter in the off-season, but not necessarily happier. The no-frills design of the Wahoo Kickr Run, plus a magical mode that allows it to track your pace without touching a button, is what makes it the most real-pavement-seeming treadmill I have ever run on. I’m admittedly 20 pounds heavier th
