macOS Tahoe Incompatible with Mac Studio M3 Ultra

If you have a Mac Studio M3 Ultra and want to upgrade it to run macOS 26.0 Tahoe, then I’m afraid you’re going to have wait for Apple to build a new release that will install on your Mac. I’m very grateful to Ken who has tried unsuccessfully to upgrade from 15.7 to 26.0. There are plenty of others reporting exactly the same: the upgrade goes well until towards the end, then aborts and the Mac is restarted back into 15.7. The problem seems to originate from an error in its neural engine driver.

A postmortem of three recent issues

Between August and early September, three infrastructure bugs intermittently degraded Claude's response quality. We've now resolved these issues and want to explain what happened. In early August, a number of users began reporting degraded responses from Claude. These initial reports were difficult to distinguish from normal variation in user feedback. By late August, the increasing frequency and persistence of these reports prompted us to open an investigation that led us to uncover three sepa

Fede Álvarez Wrote the ‘Alien: Romulus’ Sequel to Avoid an ‘Alien 3’ Situation

Alien: Earth just dropped a chest-burstingly good episode ahead of next week’s finale (read io9’s recap here), but fans are just as eager to learn what’s next for the sci-fi series on the big screen. One who would know is Fede Álvarez, who helmed last year’s Alien: Romulus and is closely involved in its sequel. He’s not directing it, but he’s helping choose who does—and he co-wrote the script with a bit of important Alien history in mind. While some fans (ahem) think Alien 3 is actually pretty

White House officials reportedly frustrated by Anthropic’s law enforcement AI limits

Anthropic's AI models could potentially help spies analyze classified documents, but the company draws the line at domestic surveillance. That restriction is reportedly making the Trump administration angry. On Tuesday, Semafor reported that Anthropic faces growing hostility from the Trump administration over the AI company's restrictions on law enforcement uses of its Claude models. Two senior White House officials told the outlet that federal contractors working with agencies like the FBI and

You can hold on to your butts thanks to DNA that evolved in fish

Evolution has adapted the digits of mammals for an enormous range of uses, from our opposable thumbs to the spindly digits that support bat wings to the robust bones that support the hoofs of horses. But how we got digits in the first place hasn't been entirely clear. The fish that limbed vertebrates evolved from don't have obvious digit equivalents, and the most common types of fish just have a large collection of rays supporting their fins. Despite this uncertainty, we have identified some ge

Something Weird Is Going on With the Sun, Scientists Find

The Sun — usually so predictable — is exhibiting some surprising behavior and that has scientists very intrigued. Astronomers had predicted that our host star was entering a period of relative quiet back in 2008, but NASA scientists have published a new study in The Astrophysical Journal Letters that found that the Sun has instead defied expectations by becoming more active, with increased sunspots and solar flares. "All signs were pointing to the Sun going into a prolonged phase of low activi

WhatsApp for iOS gets message reminders

A few weeks ago, WhatsApp started testing a feature that would let users set reminders for incoming messages. This feature is now live. Here’s how it works. Preset or custom timers spanning 1 minute to 1 day Different users have different methods to avoid forgetting to reply to a text message. If you’re anything like me, you probably keep them unread until you can actually respond. Still, sometimes, a few important messages can fall through the cracks. With its latest update (via WABetaInfo),

Ben Stiller to star in new Apple TV+ limited series, after stepping back from Severance directing role

Apple TV+ is staying in the Ben Stiller business. After reeling in the success of Severance, which Stiller was intimately involved with in the first two seasons, the streamer has managed to sign up Stiller in a rare acting capacity. He will star, alongside Jessica Chastain, in a new eight-part limited series called “The Off Weeks”. The series follows a writing professor (Stiller) who is going through a messy divorce, and engages in a romance with the mysterious Stella West (Chastain). For her p

The iPhone 17 makes the iPhone 16e even more pointless

We were pretty underwhelmed by the iPhone 16e when it debuted earlier this year, mostly due to its $599 price tag, which makes it a poor replacement for the budget-oriented iPhone SE. And now that the iPhone 17 has debuted, the 16e makes even less sense. For $200 more, you get a larger and better screen with ProMotion, support for MagSafe wireless charging, a zippier processor, two cameras instead of one — and double the storage. Sure, that price difference hurts a bit, but I think the iPhone 17

RGG accidentally leaked that it's working on Yakuza Kiwami 3

Get ready for a return to the life of Kazuma Kiryu, because it seems that a remake of Yakuza 3 is on the way. The leak was discovered on developer Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios' website. Fans noticed that there was an entry for Yakuza Kiwami 3 alongside the listings for the remakes of the first two Yakuza games — Yakuza Kiwami and Yakuza Kiwami 2 — on the RGG site. Although the listing has since been removed, screencaps shared on social media documented the accidental reveal. The timing of the leak als

ShinyHunters claims 1.5 billion Salesforce records stolen in Drift hacks

The ShinyHunters extortion group claims to have stolen over 1.5 billion Salesforce records from 760 companies using compromised Salesloft Drift OAuth tokens. For the past year, the threat actors have been targeting Salesforce customers in data theft attacks using social engineering and malicious OAuth applications to breach Salesforce instances and download data. The stolen data is then used to extort companies into paying a ransom to prevent the data from being publicly leaked. These attacks

iPhone 17 Pro Review: Practical Perfection With Two Capital P’s

2025 Deciding on whether to get an iPhone 17 Pro or 17 Pro Max couldn’t be easier. These two “pro” phones have no compromises. Whereas the iPhone Air is all about showing off its ridiculously thin and light design, the iPhone 17 Pros go in the opposite direction with thicker and heavier designs. Apple is basically saying, “F*ck all that skinny noise, let’s throw everything but the kitchen sink at them.” Even better cameras on the front and back? Check. The longest battery life of any iPhone? Two ‘Flying Cars’ Collide During Air Show Rehearsal in China

Two “flying cars” collided on Tuesday during an air show rehearsal in China, injuring one of the pilots, according to a report from CNN. The incident happened at the Changchun Air Show in Jilin, China, where two XPeng AeroHT aircraft collided midair, forcing one of them to the ground. The other vehicle was able to land safely, according to Electrek, and the cause of the crash is under investigation. The company told CNN that the crash was the result of “insufficient spacing” and one of the fly

Alex Lawther Didn’t Know Just How Much His ‘Andor’ Manifesto Hit Until Season 2

Of many, many breakout moments in Andor‘s first season, the passionate posthumous manifesto of Alex Lawther’s Karis Nemik providing the backdrop for Cassian’s return home remains one of the series’ standouts—perhaps only matched when the recording made a surprise return in the show’s second and final season, spreading the message of the Rebellion like a fire across the galaxy. But it wasn’t until the man behind the performance himself learned about that return that he realized just how much of a

CNET Editors Tested Camping Gear All Summer: Here Are Our Favorite Gadgets

Why I like it: The Grayl GeoPress is among my best outdoor gear purchases. I feel confident drinking water from lakes, rivers and even the sketchiest of sources with this filtered water bottle -- and that's saying something, because I nearly bit the dust by acquiring three strains of E. Coli from contaminated water at one point (before I knew about Grayl). It efficiently removes waterborne pathogens, including 99.9999% of bacteria, viruses and protozoa, and filters particulates like silt, micro

Backstabbing and Moral Decay Rule in This Fierce Drama That's Worth Rewatching

There are some TV shows that stick with you forever (and others you completely forgot you've ever watched). For me, Damages, which originally aired for five seasons on FX, is seared in my brain since its first release in 2007. And it's now available to stream for free on Tubi. I was addicted from the series' first episode, which opens with Rose Byrne's character running out of an apartment building into the bustling streets of New York wearing nothing but a blood-soaked trench coat and high hee

New Bill Aims to Block Both Online Adult Content and VPNs

If you live in Michigan, you might not be able to legally use a VPN soon if a new bill is passed into law. On Sept. 11, Michigan Republican representatives proposed far-reaching legislation banning adult internet content. The bill, called the Anticorruption of Public Morals Act and advanced by six Republican representatives, would ban a wide variety of adult content online, ranging from ASMR and adult manga to AI content and any depiction of transgender people. It also seeks to ban all use of V

On Wednesday, AI security firm Irregular announced $80 million in new funding in a round led by Sequoia Capital and Redpoint Ventures, with participation from Wiz CEO Assaf Rappaport. A source close to the deal said the round valued Irregular at $450 million. “Our view is that soon, a lot of economic activity is going to come from human-on-AI interaction and AI-on-AI interaction,” co-founder Dan Lahav told TechCrunch, “and that’s going to break the security stack along multiple points.” Former
