A 1960s schools experiment that created a new alphabet

Throughout my life, my mum has always been a big reader. She was in three or four book clubs at the same time. She’d devour whatever texts my siblings and I were studying in school, handwrite notes for our lunchboxes and write in her diary every night. Our fridge door was a revolving display of word-of-the-day flashcards. Despite this, she also was and remains, by some margin, the worst speller I have met. Signs of autism could be encoded in the way you walk

Autism is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how people's brains develop and function, impacting behaviour, communication and socialising. It can also involve differences in the way you move and walk – known as your gait. Having an "odd gait" is now listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders as a supporting diagnostic feature of autism. What does this look like? The FCC plans to ban Chinese technology in undersea cables

The Federal Communication Commission plans to vote on new rules that will ban the use of Chinese technology in undersea cables, according to a press release from FCC Chairman Brendan Carr. The proposed rules will apply to any company on the FCC's existing list of entities that pose "an unacceptable risk to the national security of the United States." Besides "prohibiting the use of 'covered' equipment," the FCC's new rules will also limit the ability for Chinese companies to receive a license t

Nvidia’s resumption of H20 chip sales related to rare-earth element trade talks

Rare-earth elements appear to be behind Nvidia’s stance on China. After announcing in June plans to essentially withdraw from the Chinese market, the semiconductor chip and AI giant reversed course and said it was filing an application to restart sales of its H20 AI chip to China. U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said Tuesday that Nvidia’s plans to start selling its H20 AI chips are tied to ongoing trade discussions with China regarding rare-earth elements, according to reporting from

DHS Faces New Pressure Over DNA Taken From Immigrant Children

United States Senator Ron Wyden is pressing the United States departments of Homeland Security and Justice to explain how and why they are collecting DNA from immigrants, including children, on a massive scale. Wyden confronted the agencies with demands this week to explain the scope, legality, and oversight of the government’s DNA collection. In letters to DOJ and DHS, the Oregon Democrat also criticized what he described as a “chilling expansion” of a sprawling and opaque system, accusing Tru

Tariff Troubles Ahead: Auto Experts Advice on Rising EV and Car Prices

It's not just iPhones and TVs that might cost more. President Donald Trump's tariff policies might be driving up the cost of electric vehicles and combustion cars, too. EVs, in fact, might be especially vulnerable to the new tariffs that target China (a major exporter of critical metals) and the steel industry. China already has a near monopoly on critical minerals and rare earth metals used to manufacture cars, and these tariffs have given China a reason to use that as leverage over the US. Th

‘Extremely Severe’ Obesity in American Kids Is Surging, Study Finds

Many Americans today are living with obesity, even with the advent of newer, more effective drugs like semaglutide (the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy). It’s a problem that seems to be getting especially serious in kids, however. Research out today finds that the percentage of children with “extremely severe” obesity has surged in the U.S. over the past decade and a half. Scientists at the University of California San Diego led the study, which examined nationally representative data o

Stellantis abandons hydrogen fuel cell development

To paraphrase Mean Girls, "stop trying to make hydrogen happen." For some years now, detractors of battery electric vehicles have held up hydrogen as a clean fuel panacea. That sometimes refers to hydrogen combustion engines, but more often, it's hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles, or FCEVs. Both promise motoring with only water emitted from the vehicles' exhausts. It's just that hydrogen actually kinda sucks as a fuel, and automaker Stellantis announced today that it is ending the developmen

Meet the cement transport ship that makes cement ingredients while sailing

Shipping has a pollution problem, but one company has a solution that does more than just eliminate a boat’s carbon dioxide. London-based Seabound has developed a carbon capture system that transforms CO 2 from the engine into limestone, a key ingredient in cement. Fittingly, the company has installed it aboard the UBC Cork, a cement carrier currently sailing through the Mediterranean Sea. When the ship docks in Norway, the limestone created from the voyage will be offloaded and used to make m

Nvidia is looking to ship more advanced chips to China than its current generation, CEO Jensen Huang said on Wednesday, as he looks to revitalize sales in the world's second-largest economy. The comments come after Nvidia said on Monday that it will resume sales of its H20 artificial intelligence chip to China, reversing a previous ban. The H20 is a less-advanced semiconductor designed for AI workloads that comply with U.S. export restrictions to China. "I hope to get more advanced chips into

TL;DR Nothing has posted a video showing co-founder Carl Pei reacting to Nothing Phone 3 reviews. Pei defended the Glyph Matrix rear screen and its limited uses, claiming that there will be a rich ecosystem in the future. He also defended the use of the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 chip, saying the company wasn’t catering to ‘spec warriors.’ Nothing launched the Nothing Phone 3 earlier this month, and it looks like a well-rounded Android phone. However, the device has more than its fair share of compl

Get the macOS Finder to Do Just About Anything by Typing Natural Language Commands

I'm genuinely not sure if large language models—often referred to as “AI” in shorthand—are the future of computing. But I also don't think chatbots are how people will use this technology in the years to come. Substage, an indie Mac application by developer Joseph Humfrey, is a simple app that points to a potential alternative—one that's useful right now. This application floats under every Finder window, meaning you see it only when you're browsing files in macOS. You can type English-languag

Chinese authorities are using a new tool to hack seized phones and extract data

Security researchers say Chinese authorities are using a new type of malware to extract data from seized phones, allowing them to obtain text messages — including from chat apps such as Signal — images, location histories, audio recordings, contacts, and more. On Wednesday, mobile cybersecurity company Lookout published a new report — shared exclusively with TechCrunch — detailing the hacking tool called Massistant, which the company said was developed by Chinese tech giant Xiamen Meiya Pico.
