US and China agree to agree on a TikTok deal

The long-promised deal to "save" TikTok remains elusive even as the US and China seem to be inching toward an agreement. On Friday, President Donald Trump did little to clarify where the deal currently stands following a call with Chinese President Xi Jinping. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said both that the two had "made progress" on "approval of the TikTok Deal" and that he "appreciate[s] the TikTok approval." Trump also told reporters in the Oval Office that "he approved the TikTok deal,"

Dialing Up the Internet Phonebook

You might’ve heard of the Internet Phone Book, a collection of poetic, interesting, personal websites, and essays about websites, collected by Kristopher and Elliott. We chatted about how the phonebook was made, and about why they’re optimistic about the web that’s made by real people and artists. TLDR: Make a website, it’ll save your soul. Because Kinopio sponsored the first printing of the phone book, I was sent three extra copies. I wasn’t sure what to do with them though. When I asked what

Chimps consume alcohol equivalent of nearly 2 drinks a day

In 2014, University of California, Berkeley biologist Robert Dudley wrote a book called The Drunken Monkey: Why We Drink and Abuse Alcohol. His controversial "drunken monkey hypothesis" proposed that the human attraction to alcohol goes back about 18 million years, to the origin of the great apes, and that social communication and sharing food evolved to better identify the presence of fruit from a distance. At the time, skeptical scientists insisted that this was unlikely because chimpanzees an

Trump says Xi approves of TikTok deal as leaders plan South Korea meeting

Trump says Xi approves of TikTok deal as leaders plan South Korea meeting TikTok, which is run by Chinese firm Bytedance, was previously told it had to sell its US operations or risk being shut down. Trump wrote on Truth Social the call was "productive" and he "appreciated" Xi's approval of deal, which would reportedly see TikTok's US business sold to a group of US investors. The president announced he will meet Xi at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in South Korea next month, add

Trump Gives Suspiciously Vague Update on TikTok Deal

On Monday, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced that negotiators from the U.S. and China had agreed on a “framework” for a deal that would give an American company control of TikTok. And while most people assumed we would hear about the details this week, we’ve arrived at Friday, and it’s still unclear what might be happening with the video-sharing platform. President Donald Trump held a call with President Xi Jinping of China on Friday to discuss a range of topics. Trump mentioned TikTok

Trump and Xi to meet in South Korea as TikTok deal approved

Trump and Xi to meet in South Korea as TikTok deal approved Trump, however, delayed implementing the ban four times since it was first announced in January, and earlier this week extended the deadline again to December. TikTok, which is run by Chinese firm Bytedance, was previously told it had to sell its US operations or risk being shut down. Trump wrote on Truth Social the call was "productive" and the approval was "appreciated", adding that he would travel to China next year after the two

Dark Smoke Billows After Horrific Collision Between Flying Cars

Ouch. Two flying cars collided with each other during an airshow rehearsal in Changchun, a city in northeastern China. Videos on social media show emergency response vehicles at the scene as a big plume of dark smoke billows from one of the wrecks. Fortunately, it doesn't sound like anybody involved in the crash between the two electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) vehicles, developed by the Xpeng AeroHT subsidiary of EV giant Xpeng, was seriously hurt. However, one unnamed company

Trump’s Golden Dome Projected to Cost Exponentially More Than the Manhattan Project

Donald Trump has many grand plans for America, one of the more ambitious of which is to create a giant invisible space shield that theoretically protects the country from rockets. In January, Trump announced, via executive order, the creation of a “Golden Dome,” designed to protect Americans from the “threat of attack by ballistic, hypersonic, and cruise missiles, and other advanced aerial attacks.” The project, Trump said, would use a network of satellites to detect and repel aerial attacks on

What Is a High Refresh Rate? Explaining 120 Hz on Phones, TVs, and Monitors

Many of our favorite TVs and monitors feature displays with high refresh rates, promising smoother on-screen action and a sharper picture. The Invisible Character That Cost Me Too Much Debugging Time

The Problem Imagine this: someone tells you they can’t log in. At first, it feels like the kind of bug you can squash before finishing your coffee. Maybe they fat-fingered their password. Maybe their browser cache is holding onto stale session cookies. Easy. Except it isn’t. You check the admin panel. The email is there: james.bond@mi6.com . Looks fine. The password hash matches what the user typed in. Logs show the request hitting the system cleanly. No obvious anomalies. And yet, every att

Don’t Get Too Excited for That Nvidia and Intel Chip Just Yet

What’s the point of competition anymore? Nvidia may still be trying to make its own CPUs. Intel could have beefed up its Arc GPUs around the corner. But now the two U.S.-based chipmakers plan to make SoCs, or system-on-chips, combining each company’s specialty. While we’re all curious about what this means for the future of PCs, you’ll need to wait a good long while to see what form the new chips from the new Wonder Twins will take. Nvidia is effectively netting a $5 billion stake in Intel, a d

Universal Hepatitis B Vaccination at Birth Is Safe, For Now

The vaccine advisory panel newly reconfigured by Robert F. Kennedy is delaying its decision on whether to continue recommending that children universally receive their first dose for hepatitis B vaccination at birth. In a surprise move Friday morning, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) tabled its scheduled vote over the merits of universal hepatitis B vaccination starting at birth—a policy first enshrined by the ACIP over 30 years ago. Experts at the Centers for Disease Con

Count Folke Bernadotte: Sweden's Servant of Peace (2010)

On 17 September 1948 Count Folke Bernadotte, the first of many United Nations mediators assigned the thankless task of attempting to find a peaceful solution to the seemingly intractable problem of hostility in the Middle East, was assassinated in Jerusalem. He had arrived in the city on a mission to establish a ceasefire between the Arabs and the newly proclaimed state of Israel. His killers were members of the extremist Jewish group Lehi – often called ‘the Stern Gang’ – who had already murder

Trump’s Golden Dome will cost 10 to 100 times more than the Manhattan Project

One thing that's evident about President Donald Trump's proposal for the Golden Dome missile defense shield is that designing, deploying, and sustaining it will cost a lot of money, at least several hundred billion dollars, over the course of several decades. Beyond that, it's really anyone's guess. That doesn't sit well with some lawmakers, but the Republican-controlled Congress committed $25 billion in July as a down payment for new missile-defense technologies. The White House stated in May

The Land Bridge You’ve Never Heard Of

For many of us, when we think of land bridges, we tend to think of the Bering Land Bridge (actually more of a swamp), which ancient humans traversed to reach North America from modern-day Siberia during the last Ice Age. But there may have been another, crucial stretch of land that aided early human migration—this time, far across the continent, on the Anatolian coast. That’s the major new finding from a team of Turkish archeologists who have uncovered over 100 stone artifacts from ten differen

RFK Jr.’s Handpicked Vaccine Panel Nixes Measles-Chickenpox Combo for Kids Under 4

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s handpicked vaccine recommendation panel has just issued guidance that, if acted on, could overhaul when and how children receive vaccines designed to protect them from dangerous diseases like measles, rubella, and chickenpox. The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) met on Thursday. In an 8 to 3 vote, they recommended against the use of the combined measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella (chickenpox) vaccine in children under four. They are instead now rec

Intel says Arc GPUs will live on after Nvidia deal

In the future, Intel will make CPUs with Nvidia graphics inside — among other things , Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang confirmed today that Nvidia will contribute “GPU chiplets” that Intel can place alongside its x86 CPU cores instead of the Arc integrated graphics it develops in-house today. But, at least for now, Intel says that doesn’t mean Intel’s own graphics are going away. “We’re not discussing specific roadmaps at this time, but the collaboration is complementary to Intel’s roadmap and Intel wi

New Bill Aims to Block Both Online Adult Content and VPNs: How Your VPN Could Be Affected
