Nor'easter floods New Jersey town, shark spotted swimming through streets

A powerful nor'easter dumped floodwaters into Surf City, New Jersey over the weekend, turning suburban streets into waterways. A resident captured video of a shark's dorsal fin cutting through the water in a driveway before it headed toward Barnegat Bay. Shark researcher Greg Skomal identified it as a smooth dogfish, a small species common to the area and harmless to humans.

Microsoft Threat Intelligence reported on Sept. 29 that Russia-linked APT group Star Blizzard has replaced its ClickFix social-engineering technique with a new malware delivery method called RedFlick. Study links butterfly wing patterns to barbershop-pole motion illusion

A new paper in Nature reports that stripes and spots on many butterfly wings create a visual effect similar to the illusion seen in rotating barbershop poles, where predators misjudge the insect's speed and direction. Co-author George Hancock of the University of Exeter says these patterns generate false motion cues while masking the butterfly's actual flight path, interfering with predators during the split-second window of an attack.

A free trial activates automatically on first setup.

Blog post rebuilds John Coltrane's hand-drawn tone circle as an interactive widget

A music theory blog post reconstructs a circular diagram that John Coltrane once sketched and gave to Yusef Lateef, who later referenced it in his own book on scales. The diagram overlays chromatic scales onto the circle of fifths/fourths, and the post turns it into an interactive tool letting users rotate keys and highlight harmonic shapes, including patterns connected to Coltrane's composition 'Giant Steps'.
