A Leading Indicator Has Emerged Suggesting That the AI Industry Is Cooked

In the world of cultural commentary, there are plenty of benchmarks used to determine when a trend is on its deathbed. From the classic shark-jumping episode of "Happy Days" to the adoption of Facebook by grandparents the world around, those with their ears to the ground can spot when a craze is on its way out. In that vein, the news that Meta founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg is spending hundreds of millions of dollars to build supercharged AI sure strikes us as bad news for that industry. Let'

The Last of Us co-creator Neil Druckmann exits HBO show

Two key writers of HBO's series The Last of Us are moving on, according to announcements on Instagram yesterday. Neil Druckmann, co-creator of the franchise, and Halley Gross, co-writer of The Last of Us Part 2 and frequent writer on the show, are both leaving before work begins on season 3. Both were credited as executive producers on the show; Druckmann frequently contributed writing to episodes, as did Gross, and Druckmann also directed. Druckmann and Gross co-wrote the second game, The Last

Meta’s “AI superintelligence” effort sounds just like its failed “metaverse”

In a memo to employees earlier this week, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg shared a vision for a near-future in which "personal [AI] superintelligence for everyone" forms "the beginning of a new era for humanity." The newly formed Meta Superintelligence Labs—freshly staffed with multiple high-level acquisitions from OpenAI and other AI companies—will spearhead the development of "our next generation of models to get to the frontier in the next year or so," Zuckerberg wrote. Reading that memo, I couldn'

PlayStation needs Neil Druckmann more than HBO does

I really wanted to love season two of HBO’s The Last of Us. For the most part, I did — but it was also impossible to ignore the online masses saying that showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann had lost the thread in season two. Some of that comes from creative choices the pair made in adapting the first half of the PlayStation game The Last of Us Part II to TV; it’s a story with a sprawling plot that asks a lot of the player and, as it turns out, even more of a passive audience. The season t

‘Hot Spring Shark Attack’ Is Goofy and It Knows It

If you’re looking for adventure horror filled with toothy creatures and slick special effects, buy a ticket for Jurassic World Rebirth. On a much smaller scale, however, there’s another new movie whose title says it all: Hot Spring Shark Attack. How does a shark big enough to chomp on a person find its way into a hot spring? And how does a town dependent on tourism deal with this extremely inconvenient new threat? All is revealed in the goofiest ways. Hot Spring Shark Attack being released so c

What to expect at Samsung Galaxy Unpacked next week

Samsung has announced that its next Galaxy Unpacked event will be taking place on July 9 at 10AM ET. This is the third major Unpacked event of the year, following launches of the Galaxy S25 series in January and, more recently, a virtual unveiling of the Galaxy S25 Edge. This time, if previous years are any indication, the company should be showing off new foldables and wearables. A lot of it may be business as usual, but the company has hinted that some possibly exciting new additions are in t

ICEBlock, an app for anonymously reporting ICE sightings, goes viral

In Brief ICEBlock, an iPhone app that allows users to anonymously report sightings of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents, has rocketed to one of the coveted top spots in Apple’s U.S. App Store rankings. The upshot: Criticism from U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi helped get it there. Most of ICEBlock’s users — about 20,000 — were in Los Angeles, where ICE raids have become commonplace over recent weeks, according to CNN. Following Bondi’s remarks late Monday, the app went vira

The Bands of ‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Are Having a Charts Battle in Real Life Too

Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation’s K-Pop Demon Hunters is currently topping the streamer’s most-watched rankings, and in a funny life-imitating-art moment, the soundtrack’s leading singles from the film’s songwriter EJAE are now battling it out on the Billboard 100. In the film, the heroic Huntrix, who fight demons by stage light, are fan-favorite K-pop performers who find themselves facing a big threat when a new boy band goes viral. Unfortunately, the handsome and debonair Saja Boys also h

Tesla's Self-Driving Mode Causes It to Get Hit by Train

Tesla's so-called "self-driving" features have some serious issues with train tracks — and in a recent instance, it led to a small collision with a moving freight train. As Pennsylvania-based broadcaster WFMZ reports, a family of three was forced to exit their Tesla in the wee hours of the morning after it decided, when in an assisted driving mode, to turn left onto some train tracks. Jared Renshaw, the fire commissioner for Southeastern PA's Western Berks County, told WFMZ that the car was in

How Nintendo locked down the Switch 2’s USB-C port and broke third-party docking

There’s always a reason why universal USB-C ports don’t “just work” like you’d expect. In the early days, it was incompetence or naiveté. Later, manufacturers often cheaped out. But in the case of Nintendo’s Switch 2, it appears to be intentional. With the Nintendo Switch 2, it should be easy to plug your new, more expensive console into v

The Last of Us co-creator Neil Druckmann is stepping away from the show to focus on future games

Neil Druckmann, head of the PlayStation studio Naughty Dog and co-creator of The Last of Us, is stepping away from the HBO show based on the 2013 game and its 2020 sequel to focus his work on Naughty Dog's next game. On Instagram, the studio published the following statement from Druckmann: "I've made the difficult decision to step away from my involvement in The Last of Us on HBO. With work completed on season 2 and before any meaningful work starts on season 3, now is the right time for me to

Tinder Users Must Start Logging In With Their Faces

California Tinder users will find a new feature when they open up the dating app on July 7: A mandatory Face Check on their phones will be required before they can log into their profiles. The Face Check step will begin with a new request to record a video of your face, a more casual version of setting up Apple's Face ID login. Tinder will then run checks comparing your face data to your current profile pics and automatically create a small face badge for your profile. We know just how it works

A Group of Young Cybercriminals Poses the ‘Most Imminent Threat’ of Cyberattacks Right Now

Empty grocery store shelves and grounded planes tend to signal a crisis, whether it’s an extreme weather event, public health crisis, or geopolitical emergency. But these scenes of chaos in recent weeks in the United Kingdom, United States, and Canada were caused instead by financially motivated cyberattacks—seemingly perpetrated by a collective of joyriding teens. A notorious cybercriminal group often called Scattered Spider is known for using social engineering techniques to infiltrate target

You're probably not using one of Android's best features - here's how it saves me time every day

SOPA Images/Contributor/Getty Android is chock-full of features that appeal to a wide variety of users. Some of those features have been met with wide acceptance, while others tend to be relegated to a smaller cross-section of users. Some features are there, waiting for you to make use of them, and yet they go either ignored or underused. One such example is Quick Settings. This feature has been available on Android for quite some time, and exists as a collection of tiles at the top of the No

The Ultrahuman Ring Air Shamed Me Into Ditching Unhealthy Habits

This is a little embarrassing to admit as someone who reviews wearables for a living, but the Ultrahuman Ring Air is my first-ever smart ring. I've tested just about every smartwatch and fitness tracker on the market, but never a ring. And honestly, that probably makes me the perfect person to review it -- not as a biohacking pro, but as someone who went into this exactly how most buyers would: curious, slightly skeptical and wondering whether it would make me ditch my smartwatch. Better yet, wo

Nuki, my favorite smart lock, is now available in the US; I can’t recommend it enough

Rita El Khoury / Android Authority TL;DR Europe’s best smart lock, the Nuki Smart Lock, has launched in the US. The Matter-compatible lock costs $159 alone, or $299 with the fingerprint-supporting keypad (currently $229 on Amazon). A $5.9 premium monthly subscription enables remote access via the Nuki app and notifications, but it’s free for a lifetime for early adopters. If you ask me about my favorite product I’ve ever reviewed in my 19 years as a tech writer, the answer would be pretty st

How to install a smart lock on an existing deadbolt - and why this model is my top pick

ZDNET's key takeaways The Nuki smart lock is now available for $159 on its own, and $229 when combined with the Keypad 2. This smart lock fits into an existing deadbolt, supports Matter for easy integrations with smart home systems, and features hands-free unlocking. Though innovative, the Nuki smart lock requires a subscription for full remote access; it's also very loud when locking and unlocking, and the Keypad 2 is somewhat slow. I test smart locks for a living, and the most reliable one I've used is on sale for $135

ZDNET's key takeaways The Aqara U100 smart lock was originally priced at $230, but it is currently discounted to $143. This smart lock is the most versatile I've tested; it offers a variety of unlocking options, a user-friendly app, and easy integration with Apple Home. The Aqara U100 drains the battery quickly, and the app doesn't always alert users, resulting in reduced performance within four months of use. $165.46 at Amazon $179.99 at Best Buy more buying choices The Aqara U100 Smart Lock

The new Nuki Smart Lock ($159), the company’s first designed for US deadbolts, is the most advanced retrofit smart lock I’ve tested. It can automatically unlock as you approach, lock behind you, unlock using a keypad or your fingerprint, an

ICEBlock, an app that lets users anonymously report sightings of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials, has soared up App Store charts after receiving criticism from the Trump administration. On Monday, US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem responded to CNN’s coverage of ICEBlock in a post on X, calling it an “obstruction of justi

Qantas data breach sees up to 6M customer records at risk

A Qantas data breach resulting from a cybersecurity attack has put up to 6M customer records at risk of exposure, with names, email addresses, phone numbers, and dates of birth confirmed to be included. The hack was of a contact center database operated by one of the airline’s partners … Qantas says it is too early to determine how many customers have been affected, but says it expects it to be a “significant” proportion of the 6M total.
