Beyond ChatGPT: Xcode 26 will support multiple AI models, like Claude

Last Monday, towards the end of the WWDC25 keynote, Craig Federighi said that Apple had “expanded” its vision for Swift Assist, and it would now allow developers to bring their Large Language Model of choice directly to Xcode. Now, we know more about how this is going to work. What is Swift Assist? This was a feature that Apple announced during last year’s WWDC, but hadn’t released until now, on Xcode 26 beta. Initially, as explained by Apple, it was going to serve as: “a companion for all o

Apple just gave developers access to its new local AI models, here’s how they perform

One of the very first announcements on this year’s WWDC was that for the first time, third‑party developers will get to tap directly into Apple’s on‑device AI with the new Foundation Models framework. But how do these models actually compare against what’s already out there? With the new Foundation Models framework, third-party developers can now build on the same on-device AI stack used by Apple’s native apps. In other words, this means that developers will now be able to integrate AI feature

Splatoon spinoff game will launch exclusively on Switch 2

Nintendo just dropped a trailer for a Splatoon spinoff game. Titled Splatoon Raiders, the third-person paint slinging shooter spinoff will be released exclusively on the Switch 2. This marks the first spinoff in the franchise and will take players to a new location called the Spirhalite Islands. While details are sparse at this early stage, the trailer mentions players will take on the role of “a mechanic” alongside Deep Cut, a fictional band in the Splatoon universe. There's no mention of mult

There's a Steven Universe sequel series in the works at Prime Video

It's been five years since the Steven Universe saga ended, via a final season and movie that took the story into the future. Now, it's coming back, according to a report by Deadline . Prime Video is working on a sequel series, with franchise creator Rebecca Sugar in tow as an executive producer (and hopefully as a songwriter.) This doesn't look to be a straight sequel series, in that the focus is shifting away from Steven, the Crystal Gems and Beach City. Instead, the tentatively-titled Steven

NASA is shutting down some official social media accounts, including the Curiosity rover's handle

NASA is shutting down several social media accounts run by the Science Mission Directorate, including the official Mars Curiosity Rover account on X. The organization says it made the decision in order to "make its work more accessible to the public, avoiding the potential for oversaturation or confusion." The "social media consolidation project" is concentrated in part on X, where there are dozens NASA accounts affiliated with specific missions and areas of research. So far 29 accounts are bei

Wikipedia pauses AI summaries after editors skewer the idea

Wikipedia is backing off AI article summaries… for now. Earlier this month, the platform trialed the feature in its mobile app. To say they weren't well-received by editors would be an understatement. The Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) paused the test a day later. The AI summaries appeared at the top of articles for 10 percent of mobile users. Readers had to opt in to see them. The AI-generated summaries only appeared "on a set of articles" for the two-week trial period. Editor comments in the WMF

Microsoft fixes unreachable Windows Server domain controllers

Microsoft has resolved a known issue that caused some Windows Server 2025 domain controllers to become unreachable after a restart and triggered app or service failures. As Redmond explained when it acknowledged the bug in April, servers loading the standard firewall profile instead of the domain firewall one after rebooting will have issues managing network traffic correctly. Because of this issue, services and applications running on impacted domain controller servers or remote devices may f

The Seymour Cray Era of Supercomputers

The Seymour Cray Era of Supercomputers (Review) 2025-06-11 The Seymour Cray Era of Supercomputers: From Fast Machines to Fast Codes is a technical and business history of the roughly three-decades when Seymour Cray dominated the development of a class of computer called the “supercomputer”. The book covers the development of the major supercomputer models, the technical decisions and trade-offs involved, and changes to the market. The book ends with SGI’s purchase of Cray’s assets and the tran

Research suggests Big Bang may have taken place inside a black hole

The Big Bang is often described as the explosive birth of the universe – a singular moment when space, time and matter sprang into existence. But what if this was not the beginning at all? What if our universe emerged from something else – something more familiar and radical at the same time? In a new paper, published in Physical Review D, my colleagues and I propose a striking alternative. Our calculations suggest the Big Bang was not the start of everything, but rather the outcome of a gravit

Hasbro’s Big Marvel SDCC Exclusive Is Wildly Unexpected

Everyone knows Marvel Comics has a very, very long roster of characters and, at San Diego Comic-Con this year, it’s pushing that list to the max. Hasbro just announced an exclusive set for the convention, and it’s comprised of a few characters likely unfamiliar to a lot of comic book fans, unless those fans also play the game Marvel Snap. It’s called the “Hasbro Marvel Legends Series Gamerverse Marvel Snap Savage Land 3-Pack” and consists of Rogue, Sauron (no, not that one), and Shanna the She-

Robert Eggers Is Making a ‘Christmas Carol’ Movie, and Willem Dafoe May Be Scrooge

Over the decades, few stories have been as malleable as Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Story. It’s been a Bill Murray comedy, it’s been a Robert Zemeckis CGI fest, and it’s even been a Muppet movie, just to name a few. Next up for the iconic tale, though, is what we can only assume is a much darker, scarier twist from none other than Robert Eggers. Deadline reports that the man behind The Witch, The Lighthouse, The Northman, and last year’s surprise hit Nosferatu, is in talks to write and direct

Disney, Universal Sue Midjourney Over AI Images, Calling It 'a Bottomless Pit of Plagiarism'

Disney, Universal and several of their entertainment companies filed a lawsuit against popular AI creative service Midjourney on Wednesday, alleging that the company committed copyright infringement. It's a big move from power players and will no doubt create ripple effects across the AI and entertainment industries that'll flow all the way to what you can create using AI tools. Midjourney is one of many AI image generators that use generative AI text-to-image technology. With an account, anyon

OpenAI Launches Improved Version of Latest Reasoning Model. Here's What It's Best For

OpenAI this week announced an improved version of its o3 generative AI reasoning model, saying it performed better on benchmarks and is designed to spend more time thinking on difficult problems. The new model, called o3-pro, is now available for Pro and Team users in ChatGPT and API users, and will come to Enterprise and Edu users next week. In its release notes, OpenAI said the model is similar to o1-pro, which users favored for its math, science and coding skills. It incorporates improvement

She was a Disney star with platinum records, but Bridgit Mendler gave it up to change the world

Bridgit Mendler was not in Hollywood anymore. Instead, she found herself in rural North Dakota, where the stars sparkled overhead rather than on the silver screen. And she was freezing. When her team tumbled out of their rental cars after midnight, temperatures had already plummeted into the 40s. Howling winds carried their breath away before it could fog the air. So it was with no small sense of urgency that the group scrambled to assemble a jury-rigged antenna to talk to a spacecraft that wou

“Yuck”: Wikipedia pauses AI summaries after editor revolt

Generative AI is permeating the Internet, with chatbots and AI summaries popping up faster than we can keep track. Even Wikipedia, the vast repository of knowledge famously maintained by an army of volunteer human editors, is looking to add robots to the mix. The site began testing AI summaries in some articles over the past week, but the project has been frozen after editors voiced their opinions. And that opinion is: "yuck." The seeds of this project were planted at Wikimedia's 2024 conferenc

Fair or fixed? Why Le Mans is all about “balance of performance” now.

This coming weekend will see the annual 24 Hours of Le Mans take place in France. In total, 62 cars will compete, split into three different classes. At the front of the field are the very fastest hypercars—wickedly fast prototypes that are also all hybrids, with the exception of the V12 Aston Martin Valkyries. In the middle are the pro-am LMP2s, followed by 24 GT3 cars—modified versions of performance cars that include everything from Ford Mustangs to McLaren 720s. It is racing nirvana. But wit

New Apple study challenges whether AI models truly “reason” through problems

In early June, Apple researchers released a study suggesting that simulated reasoning (SR) models, such as OpenAI's o1 and o3, DeepSeek-R1, and Claude 3.7 Sonnet Thinking, produce outputs consistent with pattern-matching from training data when faced with novel problems requiring systematic thinking. The researchers found similar results to a recent study by the United States of America Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO) in April, showing that these same models achieved low scores on novel mathematic

Apple’s Craig Federighi on the long road to the iPad’s Mac-like multitasking

CUPERTINO, Calif.—When Apple Senior Vice President of Software Engineering Craig Federighi introduced the new multitasking UI in iPadOS 26 at the company's Worldwide Developers Conference this week, he did it the same way he introduced the Calculator app for the iPad last year, or timers in the iPad's Clock app the year before—with a hint of sarcasm. "Wow," Federighi enthuses in a lightly exaggerated tone about an hour and 19 minutes into a 90-minute presentation. "More windows, a pointier poin

Senators Warn DOGE’s Social Security Administration Work Could Break Benefits

Democratic senators have concerns that the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) could break the Social Security Administration’s tech infrastructure. In a new letter addressed to SSA commissioner Frank Bisignano, senators Elizabeth Warren and Ron Wyden say that DOGE’s plans to “hastily upgrade” Social Security IT systems could disrupt the delivery of benefits or result in mass data losses. The warning comes after WIRED reported in March that DOGE officials were planning to rebui

An Experimental New Dating Site Matches Singles Based on Their Browser Histories

Whole Foods warns of shortages after cyberattack at its primary distributor UNFI

Whole Foods told its employees that the ongoing outages and disruptions at its primary distributor, United Natural Foods (UNFI), may take “several days to resolve.” The Amazon-owned retail giant told staff in an internal communication, seen by TechCrunch, that UNFI was experiencing a “nationwide technology system outage,” which UNFI has for its part described as a cybersecurity incident. Whole Foods said in the communication to staff that the cyberattack is affecting UNFI’s “ability to select

Startup Investors Foaming at the Mouth To Carve Up Your Job With AI

If there's one throughline linking us to our ancestors at the birth of industrial society, it's the anxiety of automation. Back then it was the robber barons pushing the mechanized loom — and now it's kids in their 20s founding tech startups. Meet Mercor: the software that might decide whether you get that next job, or end up in the unemployment line. At least, that's the hope for deep-pocketed investors who lavished the startup with $100 million in a recent fundraising round. With that backin
