Why AI is making us lose our minds (and not in the way you’d think)

Nearly 1 billion people are using OpenAI products — and it happened in just two years. It’s the Silicon Valley playbook: Make it great, make it cheap, get us addicted, then figure out how to make billions. We love AI because it offers cognitive shortcuts at a whole new scale. But… this won’t end well for most of us. We’

Allianz Life confirms data breach impacts majority of 1.4 million customers

Insurance company Allianz Life has confirmed that the personal information for the "majority" of its 1.4 million customers was exposed in a data breach that occurred earlier this month. "On July 16, 2025, a malicious threat actor gained access to a third-party, cloud-based CRM system used by Allianz Life Insurance Company of North America (Allianz Life)," an Allianz Life spokesperson told BleepingComputer. "The threat actor was able to obtain personally identifiable data related to the majorit

What went wrong for Yahoo

Reddit calls itself the front page of the Internet. But for a good decade or even a decade and a half, Yahoo had as legitimate of a claim as any to the title of front page of the Internet. On July 25, 2016, Yahoo met an inglorious end as an independent company, selling out to Verizon for $4.8 billion. That makes today as good of a day as any to look at what happened to Yahoo, the first front page of the Internet. How far Yahoo fell At the time, Forbes called it the saddest $5 billion deal in t

Epic Recall, Epic Fail

Expectations were turned upside down as the Epic Recall failed. “Epic Recall, Epic Win!” (大罷免,大成功) was almost an inescapable battle cry for the last few months in Taiwan. Everywhere you went there were bright-eyed bushy-tailed young volunteers asking you if you’d like to recall your local KMT legislator to “protect Taiwan and Counter China” because “they’re all in cahoots with the CCP” and “we have to protect our democracy before its too late.” Well today was Recall Election Day and to my HUGE

Bonkers NASA Mission Aims to Drop Six Helicopters Onto Mars From Space

Defense tech company AeroVironment and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory have shown off a wild concept for deploying six helicopters above the surface of Mars to scout for water and possible human landing sites. The concept, dubbed "Skyfall," builds on NASA's extremely successful and revolutionary Ingenuity Mars helicopter, which became the first manmade object to achieve powered flight on another planet in 2021. It flew a whopping 72 times over three years, vastly exceeding expectations. AeroV

Extreme sports, an FPS from former Blizzard devs and other new indie games worth checking out

Welcome to our weekly roundup of what's going on in the indie game space. There have been quite a few high-profile arrivals this week, as well as others that have left early access and or arrived on more platforms. I have a long flight this weekend and I'm a little torn over what to play while I'm in the air. I have my Switch 2, Steam Deck and Playdate with me (excessive, I know). As such, there are many ways I can go here. I haven't yet burrowed my way into Donkey Kong Bananza, so that's a str

Over 600,000 Frigidaire mini-fridges are being recalled over internal electrical components that have short-circuited and ignited, according to an announcement by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Allianz Life says ‘majority’ of customers’ personal data stolen in cyberattack

U.S. insurance giant Allianz Life has confirmed to TechCrunch that hackers stole the personal information of the “majority” of its customers, financial professionals, and employees during a mid-July data breach. Want to Improve Your iPhone Call Quality? Try This Hidden Feature

Apple released the first public beta of iOS 26 on July 24, and it brought call screening and more to the iPhone's of developers and beta testers. But you don't need to be a developer or beta tester to use a hidden iPhone feature that can make your calls clearer for the person on the other end. The feature is called Voice Isolation. Apple introduced Voice Isolation in 2023 with iOS 16.4. The tech company added the feature, alongside Wide Spectrum, to FaceTime calls with iOS 15 in 2021, but only

I Can't Stop Recommending This Window AC to Anyone Struggling to Survive Summer Heat Waves

CNET's key takeaways The Windmill AC normally costs $349 for 6,000 BTUs, but you can often find it on sale on Windmill's website Amazon Home Depot Not only is the Windmill AC the easiest unit I've ever installed, it's the only AC unit I've tried that effectively kept my older and not well-insulated home cool during a heat wave. Bonus: It's actually stylish. Although, I still would have paid for an ugly one that works. Its normal price is higher than some other window AC units, but I've paid

‘Predator: Killer of Killers’ Gets an Extended Ending Tonight

Predator: Killer of Killers ended with a tease of where the franchise could go next, and as it turns out, that’s not the full ending. After Torres and Kenji escape from the Grendel King, we see Yautja cart a cryogenically frozen Ursa away into a collection of prisoners. One of them is is Naru, the protagonist of 2022’s Prey played by Amber Midthunder. During the Predator: Badlands panel for San Diego Comic-Con, the Killers ending was shown, further revealing that Dutch (Arnold Schwarzenegger) a

A Creepy Corn Maze Awaits at the ‘Clown in a Cornfield’ Activation

Clown in a Cornfield is a million-dollar title—so eerie, so evocative, and so perfectly descriptive of Eli Craig‘s horror movie, which hit theaters earlier this year. It’s headed to Shudder and AMC+ August 8, but even if you’ve been waiting to catch it on streaming, there’s much to scream about with its San Diego Comic-Con immersive experience. Why? Well, for one thing, it’s a haunted corn maze—and even though it’s indoors, it’s still dark and spooky as you’d expect. The queue drops you right i

These Stylish Bluetooth Headphones With Unbelievable Battery Life Are Cheaper Than Ever

Discount available: Marshall's Major V headphones are worth it even at full price but right now they're down to $100 -- or around 38% off -- on Amazon, their all-time lowest price on the site. This covers the black, brown and cream colored versions, but not the midnight blue version for whatever reason. I might not be a true battle-tested headphone expert like CNET's David Carnoy but I still love headphones and I'm confident in what I like about them. My most recent pickup, the Marshall Major V

Vince Gilligan’s New Apple TV+ Sci-Fi Show Is Coming Real Soon

Amid all the hubbub of San Diego Comic-Con weekend, Apple TV finally unveiled its new sci-fi drama series, Pluribus, created by Breaking Bad creator and Better Call Saul co-creator Vince Gilligan. Although Pluribus is Gilligan’s first venture into sci-fi, it will feature a familiar face: Rhea Seehorn from Better Call Saul. Apple TV’s press release for Pluribus, like its teaser poster, doesn’t reveal much about the show in terms of what viewers can expect from its story, aside from Gilligan’s na

India bans streaming apps you’ve never heard of — but millions watch

India has ordered the blocking of 25 streaming services — many with millions of viewers and even paying subscribers — for allegedly promoting “obscene” content, in one of the South Asian nation’s biggest digital crackdowns yet. The order affects lesser-known, but wildly popular services like Ullu and ALTT that cater to the country’s mass-market appetite for adult and edgy entertainment. This week, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting issued directives to block access to websites and app

Survey shows one Pixel 10 color is a clear fan favorite

Google’s upcoming Pixel 10 colors haven’t been officially announced yet, but we got a good look at the leaked renders above at the start of the week. Naturally, we wanted to know which one you’re most excited about, so we ran polls across our site and YouTube to find out. Now, the results are in. If you missed the leak that kicked things off, the Pixel 10 is expected to launch in four colors: Obsidian, Indigo, Frost, and Limoncello. Obsidian is Google’s classic black, while Indigo is deepish bl

Brave and AdGuard now block Microsoft Recall by default

The Brave web browser and the ad-blocker AdGuard have both announced that they are blocking Microsoft Recall by default . For the uninitiated, Recall is an AI-powered tool that accompanies Windows 11 and it records everything on a PC's screen . It's pretty obvious why a privacy-minded web browser like Brave and an ad-blocker would make this move. AdGuard said the decision was made due to a "privacy concern," going on to say that "the very idea of background screen captures is unsettling." A blo

Monotonic and wall clock time in the Go time package

Monotonic and Wall Clock Time in the Go time package Modern operating systems usually keep track of two kinds of clocks: a wall clock and a monotonic clock. The wall clock is the “real-world” clock that shows calendar dates and times, like UTC or your local time. This clock can be adjusted for synchronization (for example, using NTP) or manually changed by system administrators. It can also suddenly jump due to daylight saving time or leap seconds. Nullable but not null

When working on backend applications, especially those with evolving database schemas, it’s common to see a recurring pattern: A new field is added to a model. To avoid locking the table during the migration, the field is added as nullable. The application logic is updated to start filling in this field. A backfill job runs to populate the existing records. The field is left as nullable. People often forget the final step which is updating the schema to make the field non-nullable once the dat

Steam, Itch.io are pulling ‘porn’ games. Critics say it's a slippery slope

Late in the evening on July 23, developers with games tagged as NSFW on Itch.io, a digital marketplace, began to notice something strange. Their work—whether it was a game about navigating disordered eating as a teenager, or about dick pics—no longer appeared in search results. “No notification or anything,” says former NYU Game Center educator and developer Robert Yang, whose work explores gay history and culture. “Just found out via Bluesky.” Itch.io is deindexing, or removing from its searc

7 helpful AI features in iOS 26 you can try now - and how to access them

Sabrina Ortiz/ZDNET Apple finally launched the iOS 26 public beta, and with that comes a slew of new AI features you can try out today -- and their usefulness may surprise you. While the new features may not be as flashy as the promised Siri 2.0 update, which has yet to be released, many address issues Apple users have long had with their devices or in their everyday workflows, while others are downright fun. For example, don't you like waiting for customer service calls? Want your song transi

It's a DE9, not a DB9 (but we know what you mean)

It's a DE9, Not a DB9. (But We Know What You Mean) You have been misusing the D-sub connector terminology, and we're guilty of it, too. You’ve seen them everywhere, especially on older computer equipment: the classic 9-pin serial connector. You probably know it as a DB9. It’s an iconic connector for makers, engineers, and anyone who's ever used an RS232 serial device. Here's a little secret, though: calling it a DB9 is technically wrong. The correct name is actually DE9. With the release of o

Tech Companies Are Blocking Microsoft’s Creepy ‘Recall’ Feature

Microsoft’s much-maligned Recall feature, which automatically screenshots everything you do on your Copilot+ PC to create a “photographic memory,” is not making many fans across the app developer community. According to a report from The Verge, ad blocker AdGuard and privacy-minded browser Brave have decided to block Recall and its prying eyes. Brave announced its plans to block Recall in a blog post published earlier this year, in which it tipped its cap to Signal, the encrypted messaging app
