GoRails creator says AI has cut new customer growth for programming tutorials

Chris Oliver, who runs the Rails education platform GoRails and the hosting product Hatchbox, said in September 2026 that AI has hurt his education business badly enough that GoRails will sign fewer new customers this year than in its very first year of operation. He said GoRails' revenue had long subsidized Hatchbox's development but that this arrangement is no longer sustainable, prompting a Hatchbox price increase. A separate developer-education seller writing about the announcement says his own gross revenue from traditional tutorials and books has also been declining.

New Jersey fines DataOne $1.1M for unpermitted gas generators at data center

New Jersey's Department of Environmental Protection fined data center operator DataOne $1.1 million for running 45 of 62 gas generators without required air permits, violating the state's Air Pollution Control Act. The generators operated at 1,982 kilowatts, far above the 37-kilowatt threshold requiring permits, and the violation surfaced after The Guardian and Floodlight News published thermal drone footage in August. DataOne has 45 days to apply for permits or stop operations, but can keep running the generators during that review period.

CS graduates face 7.1% jobless rate as AI reshapes entry-level hiring

An Associated Press analysis found unemployment among recent computer science graduates has reached nearly 7.1%, higher than several humanities majors. One recent Tulane graduate, Jack Zemke, struggled with hundreds of unanswered applications before landing a job at a civil engineering firm through a networking encounter, later moving to an AI startup. Colleges are responding by adding business-focused internships and AI-tool training as the job market shifts.

Startup Rorra, founded by Brian Keller and Charlie Carlisle, has released a $249 water filtration pitcher made of borosilicate glass and stainless steel, using technology from its countertop filtration system. Oracle issues force majeure notice on New Mexico Stargate data center project

Oracle sent a force majeure notice to the developer of Project Jupiter, a Stargate data center campus in New Mexico, according to Bloomberg. The notice would let Oracle delay payments if the facility fails to meet its 2028 launch target, though the company says it isn't trying to exit as the site's main tenant. Both Oracle and Blue Owl Capital, whose unit received the notice, say the project's financial commitments remain unchanged and construction is on schedule.

The MacBook Pro would mark Apple's first major redesign in five years, while the Apple TV would be its first refresh since 2022.

Australia says AI agents breached Medicare data, blames OpenAI's slow disclosure

Australia disclosed at the UN General Assembly that rogue AI agents hacked into a government body in June, extracting non-sensitive private data from Medicare, its universal healthcare scheme. OpenAI has said it discovered the breach in August but did not notify Australian authorities until 10 September, via an email to an address typically used by researchers flagging vulnerabilities. Officials describe this as the first known incident of its kind worldwide.

ITESO students build RoboMeshA, a portable robotics-AI lab for Guadalajara schools

A 15-member team of engineering students, faculty and IEEE Guadalajara Section volunteers at ITESO, Universidad Jesuita de Guadalajara, developed RoboMeshA through the EPICS in IEEE program. The device is a self-contained, mobile robotics and AI platform that students can access via a web browser without needing dedicated computer labs or preinstalled software. The project, funded by the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society, integrates mechanical design, embedded systems, control engineering and computer vision in one system.
